[ Coulson's sitting on a bench in the park. There's a black labrador puppy curled up by his feet, tongue lolling out.

To the very trained and familiar observer, it'll be clear that Coulson's still holding himself a little more stiffly than usual, but for the most part he looks relaxed and calm. Approachable, even. ]

I'm going to have to find you a name, won't I? [ The puppy whines happily.

Coulson shakes his head slowly. When he speaks again, his voice in the same deliberate and even tone, he seems to be addressing empty air: ] Barton, if you're going to follow me around, at least be more subtle about it.

[ ooc; Feel free to run into him at the park or on his way home. Coulson adopted a puppy from Thor. Also, tags may or may not contain spoilers, so proceed with caution? ]

[ And, really, he can't pretend not to like this puppy, it's too cute, so excuse him while he rubs at the things ears and puts on a stupid voice. ] You gonna tell us what you're name is or is he doing it the hard way?

I already have a name.

[ Deadpan, but he can't quite hide the smile at Clint's antics, nor is he really trying. ] He can't talk. We'll have to figure it out ourselves.

You've got many names around base. All flattering.

[ The puppy tries to scramble up, so, naturally, he pulls him up. ] Stark's probably got an app for that.

Any I don't know about? And I know that's a lie.

[ Barton and puppy. That should not be as adorable an image as it is. ] If he does, I'm not using it.

None you'd care to hear, sir.

[ He's officially in love with him, face lighting up. ] A cat translator might be tempting, you just know those things plot to take over the world.

I thought so. [ Probably not many that he doesn't know about anyhow. ]

If they are, we might do well to let them. And I'm not convinced they don't already and we just haven't noticed yet.

[ He may or may not have made up rumours at one time or another that created things, but it was only ever to see how long it got back to him. ]

Bruce's theory on Loki's starting to make more sense.

[ And you wonder why he is at times exasperated with you. ]

What theory is that?

[ But he's still his favourite, right? ]

The one where he's on equal footing with a bag of cats. [ Shrugging. ] Tasha filled me on most of what I missed. Personally I think it helps her sleep to recite it.

[ Maybe.

... Fine, yes. He is. ]

I can see that. [ Both of those things, really. ]

If she ever tries to tell you a story, pretend to look excited, even if you're not feeling it.

I think I'll be able to handle it.

[ Speaking of handling things... ]

It's good to see you up and about.

[ Letting out a breath in something that isn't quite a sigh. ] It's good to be up and about again, too.

[ He leans, lowers his tone, as if he's going to say something serious. ] Nurses back at the hospital weren't bad, though.

[ Watch him lean back so that you can see his raised eyebrow. ] Really, Barton?

Too far? [ Looking away like a kicked puppy, but amused all the same. ] Too far.

[ Don't look that way, Clint. ] I wasn't exactly looking.

[ He looks back when the puppy wriggles its way from Clint's lap to Phil's, and, no, he's not making an awe face. ] Where were you looking?

I wasn't looking anywhere. [ He lets the puppy wriggle and turn and turn again, petting its head once it's settled down.

He'll have to find work soon so that he can pay for the drycleaner. ]

This is why people think you're a robot. [ He doesn't include himself in that group, though.

He considers asking if he should be out and about this soon, but he knows he would do the same. ] How's the apartment working out?

That's all right. [ It all works in his favour, people thinking what they want about him. Either building up the myth or underestimating him. ]

[ It's okay, Coulson, Clint won't ruin the façade. ]

What? No. [ He didn't express anything there, okay? Especially not a slightly higher pitch in voice. And now he's going to shrug it away. ] Unless you want to.

[ With a friendly if careful smile. ] I wouldn't want to impose.

The day you start giving me orders outside of SHIELD? That's when you're imposing.
