[ Coulson's sitting on a bench in the park. There's a black labrador puppy curled up by his feet, tongue lolling out.

To the very trained and familiar observer, it'll be clear that Coulson's still holding himself a little more stiffly than usual, but for the most part he looks relaxed and calm. Approachable, even. ]

I'm going to have to find you a name, won't I? [ The puppy whines happily.

Coulson shakes his head slowly. When he speaks again, his voice in the same deliberate and even tone, he seems to be addressing empty air: ] Barton, if you're going to follow me around, at least be more subtle about it.

[ ooc; Feel free to run into him at the park or on his way home. Coulson adopted a puppy from Thor. Also, tags may or may not contain spoilers, so proceed with caution? ]

[ Letting out a breath in something that isn't quite a sigh. ] It's good to be up and about again, too.

[ He leans, lowers his tone, as if he's going to say something serious. ] Nurses back at the hospital weren't bad, though.

[ Watch him lean back so that you can see his raised eyebrow. ] Really, Barton?

Too far? [ Looking away like a kicked puppy, but amused all the same. ] Too far.

[ Don't look that way, Clint. ] I wasn't exactly looking.

[ He looks back when the puppy wriggles its way from Clint's lap to Phil's, and, no, he's not making an awe face. ] Where were you looking?

I wasn't looking anywhere. [ He lets the puppy wriggle and turn and turn again, petting its head once it's settled down.

He'll have to find work soon so that he can pay for the drycleaner. ]

This is why people think you're a robot. [ He doesn't include himself in that group, though.

He considers asking if he should be out and about this soon, but he knows he would do the same. ] How's the apartment working out?

That's all right. [ It all works in his favour, people thinking what they want about him. Either building up the myth or underestimating him. ]

Do you need me to move out?

[ It's okay, Coulson, Clint won't ruin the façade. ]

What? No. [ He didn't express anything there, okay? Especially not a slightly higher pitch in voice. And now he's going to shrug it away. ] Unless you want to.

[ With a friendly if careful smile. ] I wouldn't want to impose.

The day you start giving me orders outside of SHIELD? That's when you're imposing.

I'll keep that in mind.

[ He secretly likes taking orders, sometimes, it means he doesn't have to make the tough decisions. He's made enough of those in the past, and, well, Coulson is his favourite. ]

So, what we going with for this little scamp? 'Cause I'm out of ideas.

[ Coulson's good at making tough decisions, too, for all that he might seem unassuming at first.

Looking at the pup in his lap for a moment. Then inspiration strikes. ]

Fury.

Fury.

[ Fury. He looks between them, Coulson and the puppy, and it takes a few minutes, but then he shrugs, because, well, why not? ]

Just promise me you're not going to make him seek out revenge on your behalf and there'll be no objections.

I'm not that attached to the cards.

[ Yes, he is. But he still won't use little Fury here. He'd get his revenge by himself, except Fury isn't here and, well, back home Phil is dead. ]

So you won't be wanting them back, then, sir?

[ He's fighting the urge to look smug as he scratches behind the puppy's ears and gains a lolling tongue in return. ]

Of course I want them back.

[ NARROWING HIS EYES. Are you keeping something from him, Barton? You better not. ]

[ He tries to hold out longer, but the glare is burning into the side of his head, and he doesn't have the heart.

Reaching into the inner pocket of his jacket, he pulls out the cards and holds up the SHIELD evidence bag with them locked inside. ]

[ And you're only giving these to him now.

Staring at them, blindly, for a moment, before he reaches out and takes the bag. He's not getting choked up, here, he has better control than that, but it does mean a lot to him. ]

Thank you.

[ He shrugs, not commenting on the way that Phil's face lights up at the mere sight of them, but he does decide that he loves how it can do that, break away from the usual mask. ]

It's no big deal. Someone had to save them from Fury. [ He did manage to find a replacement card for the one that took the most damage, but, well, he ended up in the city before it arrived. ]

[ Softly: ] You know what they mean to me.

[ In other words, it is a big deal, and thank you for caring so much. ]

[ He shrugs again, covering it up as he fusses over the puppy, and, okay, he's in love with this ball of fluff. ]

If the way you swoon over them when you think no one's looking is anything to go by, sir, then, sure, I know.

[ Which can also be translated as you're welcome. ]

I don't swoon, Barton. [ But look at him carefully taking out the cards and looking at them one by one.

It's okay, he's in love with the ball of fluff that is his puppy as well. ]
