Because sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes I save lives, and those people go on to do great things.

But what if they don't? How do you know another human won't do those great things instead?

[It rolls onto its back, looking oddly pleased with itself despite the topic at hand.] Hmm... I just don't understand it at all.

I don't.

Life is precious. It's not somethin' that should be thrown away, or let go. If I can save a life, I will.

Even though there are over six billion other humans alive on Earth anyway? [Its tail swishes again.] That doesn't make much sense.

I'm not just a doctor for humans. It doesn't matter what the life is -- human, Vulcan, Orion, or Kyubey. If I can save it, then I'm going to try.

That wouldn't be necessary.

For me, it's usually the other way around.

Yes.

Humans of Earth are plagued by witches who spread destruction and despair. The only ones who can sense their presence and stop them are young girls with magic powers — magical girls. It's my job to find those with the greatest potential for magic and form a contract with them, so they can become magical girls and defeat witches.

... Right. And uh... why do you do that, again?

Like I said, witches exist only to spread feelings of despair, anger, hatred, and hopelessness. If they were left unchecked, there's no telling how much trouble humanity would be in. By fighting the witches, magical girls spread hope throughout the world.

And in exchange for this task, I can grant their greatest wish. [It sounds almost pleased about this.] Anything at all!

Not so sound rude, but why do you care about what happens to humanity?

It's a terrible thing for any species to go extinct, don't you think?

[mintjulep]

Yeah, I do.

[wishgranter]

Not only that, but even though they're not as advanced in science or technology as other species, humans are unique in that the range of emotions you can produce is far greater than any other. It's fascinating, in a way.

[But he's much cuter and fuzzier than your average Vulcan, isn't he?]

In a manner of speaking, yes.

I guess we have that in common, then.

Maybe.

But this city is strange... I don't even know if my powers would work here.

Is there some way you could find out?

Possibly.

I suppose I could try forming a contract with someone...

Suppose you could.

And since there aren't any witches here, if the contract worked, that person wouldn't have to do any fighting.

But I could still make that person's wish come true.

Why would you, then? If there's no witches here, what's the point of granting wishes?

[wishgranter]

That's just how it works. Even if I'm on a different planet, I can't change the rules. I'm not even sure that my power to grant wishes will work the same way here.

It's worth a try, though! You never know when a witch or some other evil thing might show up.
