[Uhura gives the camera a tight-lipped smile. She's dressed in an obnoxious red, white, and blue sweater, with an obscenely big American flagpin, and...holy shit, is that an eagle on her shoulder, trying to eat her hair?]
In honor of today's curse, I'll be offering free lessons on Earth's history, with a special focus on the era of the American Empire.
[Because bitch, she knows why this eagle is here and City you are not as cute as you think you are.]
I hope nobody's allergic to birds.
[ooc: She's at the Welcome Center for anyone who wants to action!]

A half dozen, maybe? [It can be hard to count, really, when you take into account fluency versus proficiency versus knowing the root language and thus being able to figure the rest out.] I'm an expert in xenolinguistics, so in addition to being fluent in several of the Terran languages, I know a handful of alien tongues.
I never studied runes, though.
voice;
[But more relevant, alien powers or -- technology or whatever -- might find a way to turn him back. And it's not even difficult to broach the subject subtly, since he is interested in her field of study on its own principles too.]
Runes aren't that interesting unless you're after really old, rare magic. Your skills sound much more broadly useful.
How many races or -- species, I guess -- are there? That you know of.
voice;
[Ah, nerdy excitement. Uhura loves meeting new species. It's hard to have a passion for languages without an accompanying passion for culture. She dreams of captaining her own starship, of making first contact with new species and being the first person to translate their languages and establish communication.]
voice;
[Maybe, then, she's seen weirder things than a guy made of stone? At least it's a relief to know if he happens to want to head over to study some of her languages she might not entirely lost her wits at the sight of him.]
We have some different species where I'm from. People with animal qualities, like fish and wolves.
voice;
Really? I haven't met any species like that. All the cadets I've known have been humanoid. How animal-like are they?
[A guy made of stone? Actually, that would be one of the weirdest things she's seen, but not enough to lose her wits.]
voice;
The fish people are essentially large fish with human limbs that can breathe in or out of water. The wolves are larger than humans, fur-covered of course, but they walk on two legs and speak as humans do. [Werewolves, essentially, except there's no human form.]
They're not that common. People who live in cities and small towns aren't very tolerable of... differences. [The pause there is slight but noticeable. His tact isn't entirely selfish; he worked closely with fishpeople and a wolfman-slash-troll.]
[Besides, he's in no position to throw -- gods, he hates how many idioms use rocks. :| ]
voice;
[She notices the pause, and while she can't know for sure, it's not hard to guess that the subject is a little personal. He grew up not knowing his parents, after all, and kids can be cruel.]
Fortunately, there are also people who do.
voice;
hotterslightly softer there. There has been at least one person who never thought of him like a freak. (Even if she didn't like Noonsa the fish-man but he did almost swallow her head and drown her.)][Her words aren't enough to get him admitting his own faults, but they get him a step closer to being willing to actually go meet with her. For studying and information purposes of course.]
People here seem pretty used to those things. Maybe it's just not that bad compared to suddenly being snatched up and brought to this place.
Re: voice;
It's like a port culture.
[Wait that might make sense.]
There are all kinds of people here from many different worlds. Like people who live by an interstellar shipping port. The constant contact with other cultures forces you to be more tolerant than you might be in a small town which is more homogeneous.

Re: voice;
On Earth, everybody travels. Even the biggest homebodies make trips to Mars and the moon.
voice;
I often wished getting around were easier. Even flying takes a few days at least, and a lot of energy.
