[It's dawn when Korra trudges back to the apartment. She's limping slightly, having discarded her bloody shovel blocks away.

She'd done it. Tenzin, Bolin, Asami, Mako. They're all gone. It had bothered her at first, but now she's okay. She'd done what she had to do. It's her job as the Avatar to protect people, and that's what she had done. This shouldn't bother her. This doesn't bother her.

Seriously. She's okay.]

Setsuna, I need a doctor. Naga's sick.

[If anything happens to Naga, she doesn't know what she'll do.]

[It has been four days since the monster that looked like Tenzin attacked and Korra went off to deal with them. It was hard the first day. Jinora was scared, angry at Korra, and even angrier with herself for letting Naga get hurt. She had Tohru there to help her.

And then it was easier. The emotions--fear, anger, guilt--were (for the most part) expressed and let go. All there was to do was worry about both Korra and Naga. Naga was getting sick, but she was too dangerous to go near.

Then Korra came back, and she brought another rush of emotions with her. Jinora made sure the Avatar was okay and Naga was going to be seen to before going off to sulk in her room. (Well. It's Korra's room, too, but it has a door that can be shut and that's the big thing.) She's mad; Korra shouldn't have done this alone and Jinora knows that she could have helped. Most of the girl's anger is directed at herself, in part because nothing physically stopped her from helping. If she had truly been brave--if she had been like Tenzin or Lin or Aang--she would have followed.

She would have taken care of Korra and Naga wouldn't have been bitten.

Jinora isn't coming out of the bedroom any time soon.]

[Korra knows Jinora's upset. A part of her is dimly aware that she should go to the younger girl and comfort her. She doesn't have Tenzin or Pema or anyone; she only has Korra. (Tohru, too, but exhaustion has given her tunnel vision.) She's only 10.

And you're only 18.

Korra doesn't go to the younger girl. Tohru and Jinora could barely convince her to shower and eat; the only thing she cares about right now is Naga. And truthfully, a part of her is a little resentful as well -- that she has to be the adult, that she had to be the one to kill all their friends. She wants to protect Jinora, but she resents it too, because there's nobody here to protect her, and she hadn't realized before coming to the City just how protected she had been. Here, Naga is the only one who really has her back, who she can count on completely when the chips are down and everything is falling apart. If Naga dies, a large part of Korra dies too.

She sits with the polar bear dog, Naga's head cradled on her lap. Her tattered jacket protects her from the dog's teeth and claws, which occasionally strike out as her fever rages.]

Shhhhhhhh, girl. It's all right. You're going to be all right. You have to be all right.

[It comes out harsher than she intended. She takes a deep breath.]

Jinora's fine. Are you okay?

Yeah, I'm good. I'm staying inside, mostly. [ Or going out as Spider-Man, but she doesn't need to know that. ]

Yes. Stay inside. Good.

[He doesn't need to be a part of the horror going on. What if someone he cares about is out there? He doesn't deserve that.]

What do you mean sick? I can alert the zoo vet and they can likely make a housecall. It'd be safer than taking her out in this...mess.

[A pause and a worried look.] Can I see her?

She was hurt by the ghouls. She's got some kind of fever.

[She's not crying she's not crying she's not crying]

I don't know what to do.

[Come over if you want. She won't say no to anything that might help.]

[CRAP!] Those things got to her....

I'll talk to the zoo vet and see what he can do about it.

[And he'll fly right over afterwards, wings dropping after he lands.]

How bad off is she? She lucid? [He asks Korra, unsure if he should approach. If Naga's not thinking straight, she might get riled up, and the strain could be bad for her.]

Setsuna! [She could cry with relief.] She still recognizes me, but she seems confused.

[Tohru wasn't sure how close she could get, or what she might be able to do. But she at least went back to see how Naga was doing, and speak softly, to Korra.]

I'm so sorry this happened. I should have been looking after Jinora better.

Is there anything I can do? What is it Naga likes to eat? Maybe I could make something for her?

[Korra takes a deep shuddering breath].

It's not your fault. [It'd be nice if she could blame Tohru, if she had one person that she could get angry at. But that person isn't Tohru.]

Can you get her some water? I think she's getting dehydrated.

Y-yes! Of course. I'll get water right now!

[Tohru rushes off, determined to get water - the best water! - and brings back a large bowl filled with it.]

Does she prefer her water like this? Or another way? I forgot to ask before I went....

It doesn't matter.

[Korra strips off her t-shirt (still safely covered by her liangdang) and dips it into the bowl. She hands the sopping fabric to Tohru.]

I'm going to hold her mouth open. Squeeze the water inside. Don't put in too much at once, or she might choke.

[If only Master Katara was here... But she'd have to make do with what she could remember of the older woman's methods.]

[Luke may not have any way of knowing what gender Naga is, but the "it" comment still grates on Korra's frazzled nerves.]

[Chekov is aware of Korra's dislike of communication via the network, but it's Thursday by the time he has a chance to check in. He hasn't spoken to his friend for some time; the ghouls were a distraction, and then he had needed a distraction of his own after Spock and Amanda Grayson. And then Lucy was bitten yesterday, but she is safe...

He approaches Naga before trying the apartment. Pavel likes the polar bear dog and has a sneaking suspicion that he might find Korra with her.]

[Naga lifts up her head and weakly thumps her tail. Korra doesn't respond -- she's settled into an uneasy sleep against the polar bear dog's back. She's only been managing to catch an hour or two at a time for the past week.]

[No Korra, then. Chekov's not approaching from the right angle to see her.

He walks right up to Naga and holds the hand without fingers in splints out for her inspection, talking quietly to the polar bear dog in Russian. It's nice to not speak Standard occasionally, and Chekov is sure that Naga doesn't mind what language he speaks around her.]

Friday morning

[ Liam certainly didn't hold Naga in high regard. In fact, he's had only a handful of, well... rather unpleasant meetings in truth. But, the creature could hardly help her nature and after he heard that she had been bit...

It may come as some surprise, but he was concerned. Concerned enough to check up on her in the middle of the night, gun held at ready in case some foul ghoul should decide to exact a second revenge and kill the creature. And, well... it may cause additional surprise when Liam is found resting against Naga, sound asleep and relieved beyond all reason that her fever had broken.

Checking up on her two nights running will do that to a man. But, hey. At least Naga makes for a great pillow. ]

Friday morning

[Korra has spent the past two nights sleeping outside with Naga, curled up against the polar bear dog's back so she doesn't get hurt if Naga, in her fever, lashes out with teeth and claws. Her sleep has been fitful, but somehow she's always been asleep when Liam has come by.

The sound of Naga's breathing changes, waking Korra from her sleep. She leans over Naga's back to check her face.]

You're all right.

[She melts with relief...and then sees Liam.]

[WHAT'S ANOTHER PERSON DOING HERE?!?!]

[ ah, but he was having such a nice dream. It was warm and cozy and comfy and there was even a woman screaming in the background!

It was an absolutely perfect dream -- ]

[ Blinking, he lifted his face from off Naga's side and repositioned his glasses trying to make sense of the blur in front of him. ]

Korra? [ what was she doing here? ] Is there something wrong? [ he's just confused. After all. It'd been such a long time since he's slept so well... ]
