My birthday's over the summer, Mum just makes a huge dinner. Food's important in our family, obviously.

I think that's how it's supposed to be. In families, right? I have a friend and his wife is the same way, always making huge meals to serve the whole brood while chaos ensues. That's a nice way to grow up.

So what kinds of presents do you actually want if beer isn't presentable?

Oh, Merlin, I don't know. That's the problem, really. I don't want to be boring and predictable, that's the farthest thing from what my presents should be.

Sometimes a little dangerous to leave it at that. Someone once gave me a tombstone and a plot in a cemetery.

There's a difference between being creative and being morbid.

Well she was a Vampire so I imagine that makes a difference from the giver's viewpoint. It was more of a stupid revenge present anyway. This year they recreated my old apartment at like 200% scale and then tried to kill me.

[He thinks for a second]

You know, I think I could skip the whole birthday thing.

... wow, er. Sorry, what sort of world do you come from, again?

Mine is just earth, touching bits of the NeverNever. So my world has the whole Vampires and Ghouls, Demons, Faeries. All the fun stuff that can kill you but otherwise it looks pretty much like a regular world.

Sounds a lot like mine, save for that NeverNever bit. Though I wouldn't say ghouls and fairies can kill you back home. Actually, we've got a ghoul in our attic. He just makes loads of noise when he gets lonely.

Uh.. yeah that's a definite difference. If a ghoul were living in your attic at home, anyone in the house would pretty much be dead. Seriously? Living in your attic?

Ghouls typically come with the house. Most people get rid of them like pests but ours is sort of... a pet? I don't know what to call him, exactly. They're harmless, though.

In my world, anyway. Do I even want to know what they're like in yours beyond "anyone in the house would be pretty much dead"?

Er... yeah, definitely not harmless. They're predators and they like killing. A single ghoul can go through forty or fifty pounds of meat in a day. Not too bright but they're hard as hell to kill to make up for it. I guess if you scared one enough you could keep it as a pet. Sort of like some people keep panthers as pets.

Sounds like I'd prefer your kind.

Sounds like I'd prefer my kind too. I don't even think ours eats unless it's... spiders in the attic, maybe.

Well, still disgusting but less gore involved at the very least. And plus side, pest control.
