Yesterday seemed so sad. Even if it was just a curse, everyone was acting as if they were going to be separated even before they were married. Why would anyone want to sign such a negative agreement in anticipation for a life long journey together? Isn’t that why you make sure you find ‘the one’ meant for you, to ensure you two can have a life happy together? I suppose creating and signing such a contract seems so counterproductive to marriage. If a problem arises, then the two of you should work together to fix it, right? Because… you love each other, right?

[Because marriage was supposed to be about love; a binding contract between two people. Being a princess, perhaps her ‘marriage’ to anyone would be different, unless she went out and decided to spend her life with the one she loves. So yes, her saying this is hypocritical in a sense, but it’s so sad. But if she had to be married, she would want to spend her life with the one she loves. That would make her happy.]

No, it really won't. I suppose I understand how it would help in the case of divorce, but why would anyone wish to get married anticipating divorce?

You mean, they get scared of getting married? But then why would they if they fear marriage?

No, not exactly. Scared they'll screw up, or get hurt, or that things can't possibly stay good forever. Scared of losing something important.

Most people spend every day balancing fear with hope. Marriage is just an extreme example.

I'm pretty sure the whole document thing was the point of the curse. Besides, there's a reason for the phrase "gold-digger".

But why would they go into something as binding as marriage just for money? That... doesn't make sense.

Is that what it's really like? Even my world doesn't have people sign contracts like that when people are to be wed. At least I don't think such a document exists.

Um, well, I suppose on the rare chance it occurs, it's decided between them what items and property legally belongs to who.

I don't know about romantic relationships, myself, but in friendships when things get tough, or when you fight, you don't just give up. I wouldn't see why you would do that in something as important as marriage.

Well, isn't marriage comparable to marrying your best friend? Of course you would try to make up with them and save your relationship if you felt it was failing.

I suppose so. I'm not really sure what it's like. But yes, I would prefer trying to work things out. I imagine some people are just incompatible, or grow apart, but not every relationship has to go that route.

Well, I suppose you're still rather young. I'm of marrying age, so it makes me wonder. It's a miracle the Empire hasn't forced me into marriage, now that I think about it.

[Then again, they had other plans for her, whoops.]

It's sad to think that people would grow apart, though. Though I suppose it's natural.

Oh, do you really think so, Tyr? I would sure hope people would rather work things out rather than separate. Fighting is never fun, but I suppose a good relationship is never perfect, right? Sometimes people fight, but they make up in the end.

I suppose that is a good thing. If the worst possible scenario occurred, then everything would be resolved. Still, I don't get why people would anticipate for the worst, especially in something as committed as marriage.
