[ Coulson's sitting on a bench in the park. There's a black labrador puppy curled up by his feet, tongue lolling out.

To the very trained and familiar observer, it'll be clear that Coulson's still holding himself a little more stiffly than usual, but for the most part he looks relaxed and calm. Approachable, even. ]

I'm going to have to find you a name, won't I? [ The puppy whines happily.

Coulson shakes his head slowly. When he speaks again, his voice in the same deliberate and even tone, he seems to be addressing empty air: ] Barton, if you're going to follow me around, at least be more subtle about it.

Understandable. Nobody wants to celebrate when they get here unless they are me and they make the dumb mistake of treating this place like a mini-vacation for the first month.

[Oh, how long ago that was...]

I'm not unhappy about being here.

[ It's better than being dead. ]

It has its bright spots, don't let me lead you wrong. Some of the people here have become family to me, but sometimes, I just want to go home on my own terms.

So for how long have you been here?

Three years. Went back home for six months, though, so you can subtract those from the total time if you feel up for some wacky time fun.

That still makes you one of the longest lasting residents, doesn't it?

Probably. There might be a couple others who have been here a bit longer, maybe four years or so. Some of the even older ones were gone by the time I came back.

Some of them your friends? [ Again. He's sorry, or his tone says as much. ]

Most of them. [Down under the sunny facade is a lonely woman who keeps losing friends.]

Would you like to get coffee sometime? [ Not as a — date. ]

Only if you won't hold the fact I take mine with six sugars against me.

[Nope, not as a date. Angela's not ready for that stuff again. But she likes friends and good company. Also coffee.]

Well, then. I take two sugars and milk, or the blackest possible.

[Angela leans back, stroking her chin slowly.]

This means either you're a plain guy, a laid-back kind of guy, or somebody who is a bullshit kind of guy. Which one?

[ With a twitch of amusement to the corner of his mouth. ] Define bullshit kind of guy.

The kind who dishes it out, but doesn't quite take it. It's not so much of an insult as it sounds. It just means you know when to lay down the rules even if they are bullshit, like when to take your coffee straight up even if it's the shitty office coffee they have because they get it cheap in bulk.

You don't seem like a party, frat bro kind of guy. I doubt anybody here can drag you to the red light district without a fight. And you don't look like the type to use Fury to pick up ladies so at least a major portion of the population here is safe from that worry.

I did, but not because I thought you would use him. He looks like he would just attract them on his own. Wouldn't you, Fury, wouldn't you?
