[ There's a man sitting in the ground by the fountain, his back against it: middle aged, in a suit, a badge pinned to his chest, and a very big gun in his lap.

He's also not moving and there's blood in the corner of his mouth, on his shoulder.

His eyes focus for a moment, and he manages a look of mild surprise. ] Boss? — [ a wet cough ] Does any S.H.I.E.L.D agent —?

[ Another breath, laboured, and he stills again. ]

[ ooc; Say hi to Agent Coulson. Replies will come after Bones and Roxas are done with him, all right? All right.

So I've noticed. [ One of them apparently saved him. And a magic kid. ]

Phil Coulson. Sorry I worried you, Ms Weasley.

Oh, don't. Only my professors call me that. Do I call you Mr Coulson, then?

What do you study?

[ A beat. ] Agent Coulson, or just Coulson. [ Or Phil, but while she sounds nice, he's doesn't switch to familiar that easily, that quickly. ]

Agent Coulson.

[She sounds impressed and a bit surprised, her tone of voice all but saying, Wow, erm, okay.]

School.

[Yeah, no, magic is a little too forward for a first conversation. This is her philosophy in the City.]

[ He'd argue that it's not that impressive, really. ]

Here, or in another world? [ Because that is how this place works, right. He may be getting the hang of it. ]

You're new, aren't you? You're picking it up fairly quickly.

[She sounds amused, a little.]

Home, usually. I've sort of been trying to keep up with my studies here, which works out alright. No homework, of course, clearly much better from that alone.

You saw my grand entrance.

[ He, on the other hand, sounds rather self-deprecating. ]

That's dedicated.

At least the City was nice enough to keep you out of the fountain.

[Trying to be helpful, okay? And reassuring. Or something.]

Not really dedicated, just—it's important? And I get restless. What about you? What do you do?

Drowning me would probably have worked. [ Sorry. You get a certain amount of gallow's humour in his job, it can't be helped. ]

I work for SHIELD; Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division. [ Their existence isn't classified. What they do, on the other hand. ]

Given the response on the network, I doubt anyone would've let you.

[She can roll with gallow's humour.]

... that's a mouthful.

Maybe not. Whatever this place is, it has upstanding citizen.

[ Good. ]

That's not the first time I've heard that. Just call it SHIELD.

Sounds important. D'you have people from home here with you?

The ones I have met so far seemed to be. [ But he knows, of course, that appearances can be deceiving. ]

I had people from home when I got here, too. Makes it a load easier to adjust, though it's still a lot to take in—especially if this isn't exactly normal for you. Though I'd say it's a bit mad if it was.

Dr McCoy and Roxas brought me to the hospital. Clint Barton and Natasha Romanoff are from my world, they came for a visit.

[ The vaguest of shrugs, hardly moving at all because his shoulder still hurts. ]

It isn't exactly normal. [ But it isn't that much of a stretch, either, not with everything that's happened. ]

[Ginny hasn't exactly spoken to Clint since the high school curse a bit ago, so she knows of him, but not quite him. That was the first time they met and given that they were Extremely Cursed, she doesn't count it. Really. So— ]

I know Dr McCoy. Sounds like he did a good job.

[Pause.]

You'll get used to it. Er, in a way.

Roxas did something with magic, apparently.

[ He'll be fine. It isn't that much more strange than alien demi-gods. ] I'm sure I will.

A lot of people can do magic here.

I should count myself lucky.

You don't think it's odd.

I don't think it's exactly normal, but then I have apparently just been transported to a pocket dimension and saved from the brink of death.

It's not that odd.

[She's grinning, though she can't see it. She could be offended, a little, by magic not being "exactly normal," but she's been here long enough to let it slide.]

Then I expect you'll do fine adjusting. Some people take ages. Then again, some people're stuck here for ages.

[ Well. It isn't for him. ]

I expect so. [ Wait. ] How long are people usually stuck here?
