[There's a wince in his voice as he continues:] And...although it was a curse that caused me to behave so reprehensibly...I know I must accept whatever punishment I am dealt for my transgressions.

[After all, who else could it be? Alexis is simply standing at his window waiting for his son to arrive.]

[He opens and shuts the door quietly, stepping inside a few feet before standing with his hands clasped behind his back to keep him from wringing them anxiously. He says nothing, because his father knows it is him, and at the moment he is too on edge to speak well.]

[He turns to do as his father has asked, fumbling for a moment with clumsy fingers until the lock is done. When he finishes, he turns around and steps a few feet into the room, silently awaiting what his father will say.]

[Without looking at his son, he turns and opens the door to the secret room, fully expecting Jezebel to follow after him.]

[His stomach drops and he's flooded with a sense of dread, but Jezebel follows -- and, knowing that his father will want this to be private, he shuts the door behind him as he does.]

[Jezebel shuts his eyes to hide the wince in his expression, but he does as he's told. This will not be quick, nor does he think it deserves to be -- after yesterday's indignity, he has no right to complain.

He shucks his coat and undoes the buttons to his shirt, taking them off with the practiced ease who has done this for decades. When he finishes, he leaves the clothes in a pile on the ground.]

[Jezebel obeys, pulling his hair in front of him before walking to the wall, squaring his shoulders as he extends his arms. He lays the flat of his palms against the surface of the wall and tries to relax his muscles, because tensing them will only make this even more excruciating than it has to be.]

[Alexis takes his time removing his jacket and with rolling up his sleeves. Finally, he grabs his whip and lets it unravel.]

You must never strike your father, Jezebel.

[With that, the first blow lands.]

[His stomach knots until the first blow lands; he doesn't cry out, biting his lip to keep his voice stifled.]

I know. It will never happen again.

[And he strikes him again.]
