This is Ensign Chekov, Pavel Andreievich, navigator of the USS Enterprise.

[You can trust him; he's currently in uniform. His uniform tunic has been too short in the sleeves for several months now. Oh, the woes of being a still-growing teenager!]

If you have only just arrived, you may have questions. I have attached a text file to this message that may, I hope, be useful. If there are other questions or if anyone would like to speak with me, I would be happy to talk.

Captain Kirk? Uhura and I have the communicators working. They can pick up local transmissions, and we have connected all four to a secure channel. I think that is the best that can be done.

I have no idea who that is.

But I do know this one guy. He's really thoughtful and he doesn't like a lot of people — actually, he seems to actively dislike a lot of them — so when he does show an interest, it's probably because he thinks you're worth more of his time than all the rest combined. Aaaand, I don't know how to describe him because I don't ordinarily have to do that with somebody who I already think of as a brother, he's already made the bar, y'know? If, in the future, I'm an amazingly wise and fantastic captain with an ounce of really knowing what I'm doing, I'm going to say that all came as a direct result of being around him.

I think you'd like him if you got to know him again, Dax. You can call him Bones.

I know, I sort of got that, why do you think I drew up a touching rendition of who he is? I'm not lying. Bones is the best man on this temporal plane and you'd be nuts not to go out with him.

Would you at least let me explain? It's complicated, and I think he gets that now-- But not everyone in your time period is aware of how this works. It'll be good for you to know in case someone else like me shows up who isn't so willing to tell the truth, when someone else knowing that about you could end up saving your life.

When I said I wasn't the same person, I wasn't being figurative. I was being literal. I literally wasn't the same person, and I've been five other people since then.

I like the sound of all of you so far. [ Counselor, gymnast ... fun careers for hard-working people, after a fashion. ] Sounds like catching up is exactly what you guys need to do.

[ huff, because he's being damn insistent that she spend time with leonard when she's trying to be serious and violating a lot of directives and outdated laws in doing so. ]

Listen to me. This isn't something we share with outsiders. Leonard knows part of the reason why and can explain that. [ she doesn't want to talk about the speciesism and how they were wikhov'na pan'tisha. ] I actually-- Emony actually broke one of our society's biggest rules at the time by telling him she was joined, but he helped save two lives by knowing what he did, which is why I'm telling you.

I'm not going to tell anyone. I hear what you're saying, Dax, and I appreciate the weight of what it is you're telling me. [ Raising his brows, he gives her room to elaborate if she wants to. ] I'm just wondering why you're doing that.

[ Because he isn't Bones, he's literally just met this woman and casually asked her out; if these rules are so important, he wouldn't have held her silence against her. Mostly, Jim is feeling way out of his depth. ]

If Leonard vanishes and a Joined Trill appears, who will help them if something happens? Who will know that the worm in their belly isn't some sort of parasite, but a sentient lifeform that is part of them? Who will be able tell doctors here not to remove the symbiont or the host will die if that host is unable to say it themselves?

I've had the symbiont taken out of me before it was time. [ as jadzia. ] That's a pain and emptiness that-- That I wouldn't even wish upon the man who killed my previous host.

Alright, I understand. Thank you for filling me in when you didn't have to, and you have my word I'll try to help your people where Bones can't. I won't mention any of this again, not even to Starfleet.

[ It's a lot more than he'd do for most people, but ... yeah, she's grumpy and a little too like Bones for him to refuse his confidence. ]

Thank you. [ she means it. it may be a century or so too early for anyone within starfleet to really know this, but if it saves a life -- it's worth it. ezri doesn't want to see anyone die simply because of ignorance. not when that misunderstanding can be easily cleared up.

to be honest, though, it's not so much that leonard trusts him. she's not emony and that was a long time ago for her... it's more his reputation and the fact that koloth and other klingons that she's still friends with, some of the most honorable men she's ever met, respect james t. kirk, despite some of them having once been enemies of his. that's enough for dax. ]

[ If Jim knew any of that, he'd be astounded and then promptly delighted. ]

[ It's what Chris would have done, to be there for someone in need. The intent has always lived inside of Jim, requiring a kick in the head to set the confidence in gear to be that man he wants to. ]

Are you sure there isn't anything you need? I told you I was a ship's counselor. I might not be here for long, judging by the way other residents are talking. If you need someone to speak with, or your crew does, I'm available to do so -- for now.

[ take her up on this offer, kirk. the lady's died eight times, several of them traumatically (shuttle accident, murder...) if anyone can understand what it's like to die, it's a joined trill. ]

[ There's no offense intended when he shakes his head. He doesn't admit how he's feeling at the best of times, even to Bones with medical proof that Jim's unbalanced blaring at him off a tricorder. ]

I'm fine, but I'd like for you to talk to Lieutenant Uhura and Ensign Chekov before you go, if you've got the time. They've been here a while, especially Chekov, and as much as I trust them I'd like a read on where they are in their own heads.

I'm not sure how fast I can get psych evaluations done in the limited amount of time I might have, but I'll do my best.

Give them a call? It doesn't have to be in-depth, I appreciate the offer even if you can't give them a full evaluation.
