[ today finds captain janeway hit with her very first curse. she's young again, standing at the threshold of change wherein a tragedy that has yet to occur will help drive her into the captain's chair. but for now, she's simply a scientist, a recent graduate of the academy who, from her perspective, has found herself sucked into some temporal anomaly while in the midst of her first assignment. at this point in her life, she's very dedicated to her field, and has no aspirations of setting her sights on command. in fact, when commander chakotay insisted that she'd one day be wearing red with four pips pinned to her collar, she laughed, because that's not her. maybe that's another kathryn janeway, one who doesn't mind being called by her first name,but it's certainly not the one who prefers to be called katie.

after being ordered out of her uniform, katie found a decent change of clothes, pocketed her combadge and grabbed the archaic device the commander had insisted was the primary means of communication in this place, and set out on a morning jog around the city. later in the afternoon, she'd stop for a breather in xanadu and pull out her older self's cell phone to fiddle with it some and ask the network a very important question. ]

Does anyone know where a girl can get a decent bowl of ice cream in this place?

[ ... Well, hello, talk about a pretty face mentioning the one thing on his mind this sunny afternoon. The sleeves of Jim's cotton top are pushed up and he's spared his jacket today, even though the heat is only bound to deepen his tan and the worst he's suffering is the first-world problem of wondering where to get a cold drink — or ice cream. Ice cream more than works, with company like that. (Sorry, Bones, Jim Kirk is evidently never done flirting.)

Clearing his throat behind the pretty young woman questioning the network, he offers an amiable smile. ]

[ he's lucky that he tans. the genetics gifted to her by her irish ancestors mean she burns and blisters before she tanned, though she already coated the exposed skin in sunscreen before she departed. her older self seemingly though along those same lines -- probably even more so, given that this ~captain~ she was destined to be likely spent more time under artificial lights on a starship than she did planetside under the rays of a real sun.

she turns, not realizing someone was behind her, holding the phone in a slack and awkward grip. ] Crepes. I like crepes, especially free crepes -- but whether I take you up on that depends on whether or not you're expecting to get something in return for your generous offer.

[ He starts walking, turning around so she's still able to see most of him as he spreads his hands. ]

Maybe I'm the crepe version of Santa, except I choose to respectfully hand you the goods instead of hurling them down a chimney. [ Hands finding his hips, he 'scrutinizes' the rooftops. ] Yeah, I definitely wouldn't be able to get anything done around here.

[ Blue eyes flicker back to her, doing nothing to dissuade a hopefully charming look of mock-seriousness. ]

Santa? [ katie's laughing, shaking her head as she falls in step beside him. ] I haven't heard anyone mention Santa in-- ages.

[ her grandparents, it was definitely her grandparents. her father had tried to get her and phoebe to buy into the old school tradition of santa claus, but the two of them had seen through the charade before her little sister turned four. their grandparents, though, would always insist they found presents for them at their house that santa must've left their by mistake. ]

Not many people follow those traditions anymore. Kids today are either too smart for it or-- [ not human, not living on earth-- ] You know, helping their mothers wrap their little sister's presents. That's kind of a dead giveaway.

[Pavel is de-aged, missing all memories of the City, and busy enjoying the lack of parental supervision in this dimension. He was frightened when he first woke up in a strange place without either of his parents; that fear all but disappeared as soon as he found some friends his age and the biggest park of all time.

His attention is diverted by a young woman talking to one of the antique devices that everyone here seems to be equipped with. Listening to the conversations of strangers is rude--he knows that--but she did say one of his favorite Standard words. He walks right up to her and touches her hand.]

[Judging by his expression, her lack of ice cream is a personal betrayal. He gives her the saddest face he can manage.]

[When Kathryn finally makes her way to an ice cream shop, she'll find a little girl ahead of her in line. She orders a giant ice cream parfait, giving the clerk a blank look when the woman asks if she's sure. Once the clerk nervously scurries away, Pai turns to Kathryn.]

[ katie blinks. that's... random, but she's already encountered people sputtering out random nonsense under the influence of a curse. maybe this is another instance of that, maybe it's just someone who's that random all the time. ]

She's out for an early morning job herself, enjoying the quiet of the City waking up (or skulking to bed) on a Saturday morning. She waves cheerfully when her path takes her near Katie, because this is the City and the girl probably won't give her the finger in return. ]

In all honesty, she can't say she misses his clumsy legs and constant warking. As a fellow jogger however, she feels obliged to note, ]

[ as "worldly" as she is, it's more an otherworldly thing than it is in relation to her own homeworld. there were some aspects of earth culture that escaped her, that she missed out on being exposed to. ]

[This has been something Marie has noticed on occasion, when speaking with Chekov, and once upon a time McCoy: The disassociation from the Earth. It makes Marie feel old in a strange (...but not wholly unamusing) way. As if she had built her own interstellar vessel out of tinfoil and string. She would love to see their ships.]

It is an Italian form of ice cream. Made in a different way, very similar flavors and texture, but... a bit better for you.
