[ today finds captain janeway hit with her very first curse. she's young again, standing at the threshold of change wherein a tragedy that has yet to occur will help drive her into the captain's chair. but for now, she's simply a scientist, a recent graduate of the academy who, from her perspective, has found herself sucked into some temporal anomaly while in the midst of her first assignment. at this point in her life, she's very dedicated to her field, and has no aspirations of setting her sights on command. in fact, when commander chakotay insisted that she'd one day be wearing red with four pips pinned to her collar, she laughed, because that's not her. maybe that's another kathryn janeway, one who doesn't mind being called by her first name,but it's certainly not the one who prefers to be called katie.

after being ordered out of her uniform, katie found a decent change of clothes, pocketed her combadge and grabbed the archaic device the commander had insisted was the primary means of communication in this place, and set out on a morning jog around the city. later in the afternoon, she'd stop for a breather in xanadu and pull out her older self's cell phone to fiddle with it some and ask the network a very important question. ]

Does anyone know where a girl can get a decent bowl of ice cream in this place?

[ uhg, the phone is doing something. she's been rather reluctant to look at its contents, knowing that this bright pink piece of ancient tech belongs to someone commander chakotay believes she's supposed to be. now she's scrolling through text message conversations she doesn't care to read until she finds that address. ]

Ah. Okay. I should... Probably find a map or something. I'm not really sure how I managed to get here. [ only that she managed to get out, to run somewhere not an apartment she shared with people who wanted her to be a captain wearing red and not an ensign in blue. ]

It happens. [ he's been to places he doesn't recall ever going to before, though that might be less like janeway's situation, and more like, he just tends to blank out - but that's another story. ] If you're willing to wait for a few minutes, I can take you there.

[ good thing his breaks a couple of minutes away, so he can get to her on time. Not ten minutes later and he arrives at Xanadu, but it takes him another ten to actually locate her, seeing as Xanadu's pretty huge. He's dressed casually, a dark collared shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows and shows off the grim reaper tattoo on his arm, and jeans. although he's never looked more at ease in his casual clothing, it still feels weird to him not to wearing his uniform for so long. a month is way too long not to be working properly, to john. ]

Hey, no problem. I've got nowhere to be, and it's a big city. Without [ transporters or hovercars ] proper public transportation, it's kind of hard to get around. Consider yourself excused.

[ he holds out his hand for a handshake. ]

I've only been here myself for a month or so, but I know there's a place near this park. Passed by it enough times when I wanted to go hiking through the forest paths. [ he nods. ] You liked it over there?

In the park? [ she shakes that offered hand. ] Yeah, I guess. My dad used to take my sister and I on all these camping trips growing up. I guess it's some familiar scenery in a sea of unfamiliar.

Yeah, this place acts well enough like a real city on a good day if you're looking for a refuge of some kind. [ he starts walking heading out of the grass and on to a path that leaders to back to the city. ] The shooting range is a familiar place to me. I hike when I get the chance.

[ she's tempted to ask: particle weapons or guns that require actual ammunition? of course, that kind of question would give her away as someone not from the 21st century like she's pretending to be. she holds back and follows his lead. ]

Yeah. If you're fond of shooting guns, it's the perfect place to be in, even if it does get noisy.

I've actually never shot one, despite spending my fair share of quality time on a farm.

[ more than that, she grew up on one. she was fantastic with a phaser, but particle weapons weren't guns, and there was a different sort of art to firing something that sent a piece of metal flying at someone vs a stream of condensed, localized energy. ]

Unless you're shooting for a game, you don't really need guns on farms, do you?

they've walked out of xanadu and into the city, and it still baffles him sometimes how it can look like a normal place. not necessarily a metropolis, but it has the essential places. ]
