ii ♕ action + video

[ today finds captain janeway hit with her very first curse. she's young again, standing at the threshold of change wherein a tragedy that has yet to occur will help drive her into the captain's chair. but for now, she's simply a scientist, a recent graduate of the academy who, from her perspective, has found herself sucked into some temporal anomaly while in the midst of her first assignment. at this point in her life, she's very dedicated to her field, and has no aspirations of setting her sights on command. in fact, when commander chakotay insisted that she'd one day be wearing red with four pips pinned to her collar, she laughed, because that's not her. maybe that's another kathryn janeway, one who doesn't mind being called by her first name, but it's certainly not the one who prefers to be called katie.

after being ordered out of her uniform, katie found a decent change of clothes, pocketed her combadge and grabbed the archaic device the commander had insisted was the primary means of communication in this place, and set out on a morning jog around the city. later in the afternoon, she'd stop for a breather in xanadu and pull out her older self's cell phone to fiddle with it some and ask the network a very important question. ]

Does anyone know where a girl can get a decent bowl of ice cream in this place?

[ the older kathryn is wishing similarly for b'elanna, but the only klingon in starfleet that this kathryn's aware of is worf. ]

Engineering, huh? [ that gets a grin out of her. her father was an engineer who found his way to a captain's chair and the high rankings of the brass. he was now putting that engineering expertise of his to work in helping to develop new starships. he was currently working on a prototype whose name she didn't have the proper clearance to learn. (little did she know, this very prototype would end up being her father's undoing. in just a few short months, he'd perish when the terra nova crashed into one of tau ceti prime's polar ice caps. ] Never thought to go to school for it and broaden your horizons in a more official capacity?

[ That gains a laugh and he has to put his crepe down on a pile of hastily arranged napkins, forsaking it as he clears up his sticky fingers. There's a nice hint of nostalgia in her curiosity, diluted from Pike's interference in Jim's life but no less pleasant for the reminder. ]

Actually, I majored in what people back home call command classes. I just think if you're going to be around a bunch of machines then you should know how they work, or enough to botch them back together when they fry.

[ her eyes go wide for a second before she catches herself, focusing on finishing off the rest of her crepe while she gets her expression back in order.

so, what are the odds that she's run into one of the starfleet officers present in the city? commander chakotay did warn her that they were around. he also warned her that they treated her differently, with respect and a sense of admiration that she wasn't ready to deal with yet. (and for all the reasons she didn't want to be admired, apparently. she wasn't captain material. she wasn't.) she had a choice: call him out on it, tell him she was ensign kathryn janeway of the uss al-batani and she knew that one day she'd be captain of some ship named voyager.

or she could leave it alone, feign ignorance, and be known as katie instead of captain janeway. she was much more comfortable with the former, and if her assumptions were wrong, she'd be outing herself as starfleet and disobeying commander chakotay's orders. ]

Kind of.

[ Jim looks like he might refrain from explaining for a moment, then there's a visible 'Nope' that passes over his features and he points upward. ]

Sure. [ If that's her guess, he won't pick at the semantics. She might be a 21st century girl, after all, and subsequently gets no arguments that might frighten her. ] Captain James T. Kirk of the USS Enterprise but, like I said, Jim's fine.

A ship you'd rather be on than here.

I guess I should be asking who wants to be here, instead.

[ she eyes that dollop warily, and against her better judgement reaches out and takes it, eating it right off her finger. she makes a face as it goes down, wrinkling her nose in disgust. ]

Oh god, why did I do that? You're right, it's gross. So gross.

[ and yet — though her current incarnation is presently unaware of this Very Important Fact — a million times better tasting than leola root. ]

A whole lot of science, mostly.

[ don't tell anyone that she just licked the napkin. somewhere in the beta quadrant, her father is screaming in horror over this public display of a supreme lack of table manners. that taste is awful, though, and it needs to be off her tongue as much as possible. ...except now everything tastes like paper and she's pulling bits of napkin out of her mouth. because that's totally attractive. ]

Science geek, party of me. [ the girl who stayed inside the tent reading physics textbooks to get herself ahead of everyone else whenever her father took the family camping. she'd grow to regret the decision to not take advantage of that precious father-daughter bonding time soon. too soon. if she were deaged to a point just a few months later, poor chakotay would've been met with a severely depressed young woman who stayed in bed all day and refused to face a world without her father in it. ]

[ she almost loses her cover by asking what jack daniels is before a faint memory of one of the parties lettie garrett had dragged her to during her first year at the academy. jack daniels — an old earth vintage, something of a rarity that close to starfleet training grounds. then again, she'd met a cadet who'd manage to get a hold of a few bottles of romulan ale and sneak them back into his dorm, so. ]
