Is this meant to be some sort of attempt at a clumsy metaphor? I've seen the other posts, of course, and I'm not entirely ignorant of the fact that this is a curse, but it's an idiotic one.

[He shoves the offending item into his pocket and shakes his head.]

I can't, for the life of me, imagine what it's supposed to mean.

It's a metaphor in the same way that a gun operates as a letter opener.

I know exactly what meaning the City would like it to have, but I'm baffled as to why any of us should take it seriously. I suppose that's my longhand way of saying I agree with you entirely.

Some people would attempt to construct a seemingly deep metaphor about constantly tripping over it. I, myself, prefer to simply see it as what it is: a nuisance, and one that will hopefully be gone by tomorrow.

Unfortunately I can't say I don't get the metaphor, but you're right, it's far better to ignore it. I'm sure tomorrow they'll have replaced it with something equally hideous, but that's also not worth thinking about.
