[ But that idea is farthest from Karl's mind. Disappointment shutters across his face at the mention of Solomon. So subtle, so mild, compared to that ferocious flare of jealousy and grief within. It's always been this way. He's always so easily replaceable for her. In the end, it's always Solomon she'll favor. Even after he as good as renounced her. ]

[ He doesn't say anything. Can't bring himself to complain. It's not his place. Instead, eyes cast down, he awaits her command, or simply her dismissal. ]
