Voice (And I wrote this two days ago not meaning it as foreshadowing)

Is it wrong that I keep expecting something to jump out and try to eat my face?  It's been a while since the last thing did that and my life seems somehow incomplete.  That's not an invitation by the way.  But the end of the year and all... some guys get to worrying.

You seem a little young to be reading the real Grimm works.

[horseish]

Why? I've read anything I wanted since we got to have books again.

[harrydresden]

You don't worry about monsters under the bed or anything? Man I gotta tell you, some things really freaked me out when I was your age.

[horseish]

I'm very brave for my age. Everyone says so.

[harrydresden]

When you're younger you have a lot smaller frame of reference. Your life must be kinda tough kid, to be able to handle freaky stories so well.

[horseish]

I guess so. I do magic with my father and that's very hard work. I have to practice all the time.

[harrydresden]

Wait, you're a wizard?

[horseish]

My father is a magician, and I'm his assistant. But I'm almost as good at it as him now.

[harrydresden]

Oh hey, my dad was a magician too!

[horseish]

Really? My father is amazing, everyone says so. But we don't have as many shows these days since people don't have as much money to pay for them.

[harrydresden]

My dad was pretty good too. Being a magician isn't the most lucrative job though so I feel your pain.

[horseish]

We used to make a lot of money, but that was before the depression started.

[harrydresden]

The 1920's?

[horseish]

It's 1930 now.

[harrydresden]

How young were you when he was making good money?

[horseish]

Ten, but we pretend I'm seven.

[harrydresden]

Yeah, people are more generous the younger kids are. I think magicians aren't in high demand as much after about that time. Though David Copperfield seemed to give a nice resurgence for a few years. A few have been pretty standout as entertainers in general but they're mostly flash. Houdini was kind of the high point.

[horseish]

[She'll nod and pretend she understands what you're on about, Harry.]

My father says it's more impressive if I'm younger. Since I'm very good.

[harrydresden]

Oh yeah? You'll have to show me sometime. My dad didn't let me do much but I knew how most of his stuff worked.

[horseish]

Okay I can show you but I can't tell you how they work. That's secret.

[harrydresden]

Heh, I wouldn't ask you to divulge anything. Secrets are important.

[horseish]

Yes they are. Sometimes I think secrets are the most important thing.

[harrydresden]

They're pretty important but I think Family is too, right? And friends.

[horseish]

I don't know. It seems like people are always talking about secrets and what some people can know and what others can't know. No one I know talks about family nearly as much as about secrets.

I do have one friend, though. Her name's Rosie. She's my first and only best friend in the world.
