1st Opportunity :: Video
[The feed clicks on, first showing Meyer's shoes, then panning up, showing a sensible brown suit, a crisp tie, and a far too serious expression for someone as young as this man appears to be.]
The way I see it, I've been kidnapped.
[He doesn't sound particularly perturbed about it.]
Perhaps this is something that is better discussed in person. I'm certainly willing and able to make a generous offer in exchange for my freedom, if my captors are reasonable men. If not, I'm afraid we'll have to go about this a different way.
[There's a long pause.]
I would appreciate a quick response to my inquiry. I think it'll be better for all of us if this goes as painlessly as possible.

You have been brought to what is, to the best of my knowledge, a self-contained universe, although some call it a pocket universe; I think it would be inaccurate to call it a pocket universe, as that would imply that it is a subdivision of another universe rather than an intersection of multiple places and times. Regardless, you are in the City. I am not sure what its nature is, but I believe it is artificial... created by the deities, maybe, or by some power greater than them. It's not impossible. Where I am from, there are advanced races capable of such things--none that I have met, but I've read about them. The City exists in what I think of as a temporal bubble. Time may pass here but, when we leave this place, we are returned to our homes at the moment of our departure with no memories of the City.
The City itself is patterned after early twenty-first century Earth, although there are many here from different times. For example, it is the year 2258 at home for me. What I find interesting about this is that people from the same universe can come into the City from different times in their histories, but that doesn't matter to you.
As for the purpose of the City, I can only guess. Perhaps the deities are studying us. There are anomalous events referred to as curses, but you will learn about those as they happen.
[He shrugs.] There are other things, but those are the most important.
Re: Video;
I see. Then given the fact that it's a self-contained universe, we're not going home any time soon, even with negotiation, unless we get "sent" home, which we can't control. The way I see it, there must be a logical explanation for all of it, but I assume it's out of our grasp for the time being.

[He's pleased. Most people just stare at him when he tries to explain the City.]
I'm Pavel Andreievich Chekov.
Re: Video;
[He assumes so, given the name, but he also knows better than to make assumptions in general.]

Re: Video;
[Given his youthful appearance, that means he was a child in Russia in the early 1900s.]

[Chekov's grasp of the less-than-pleasant parts of Russia's history isn't so great.]
What was unpleasant about Russia?
Re: Video;
I'm Jewish, Mr. Chekov. Are you not aware of how the Russian Empire felt about people like me?

Re: Video;
I'll take that to mean things have improved, then.
