[ Liam hiccuped and dabbed at the corner of his mouth, a cup of tea (spun sugar) and a plate of chocolate buttons on the table in front of him.

Someone's been eating his way through a coat with relish. ]

I wouldn't recommend eating anything essential, but this curse is rather delightful don't you think? Although if Break was here, he'd have eaten me out of house and home before breakfast. [ ah, how he missed that man!

and then he hiccuped again ] Opps, my poor manners. I do apologize but is the clock getting a bit too loud? I wish we could turn it down at night at least. I'm not getting much sleep as it is.

[ and then he shook his head and sighed, looking downcast and slightly under the weather. Who knew this much candy could be bad for a man? ]

This just isn't the same, having tea and chocolate by oneself. Elliot and everyone else have gone on home again, if you cared. [ he frowned and pinched his nose to relieve the headache he was feeling ] And they left the most horrible mess next door. They didn't even bother to return all their books! [ He's had to make 15 trips just to return them all. Such a pain! (even if the books were interesting. He may have kept one or two to read on his own.) ]

[ he thinks about this for a long moment before nodding ]

Yes, it seems I am.

Getting a pet does help some, if you prefer that route.

[ he blinks ] But what would I do with a pet while I'm at work? [ it's not like he can take it in with him to work. He's seen what Diva does to stuffed toys ]

They tend to take care of themselves. At least the cat I took in does. As long as they are fed and given water.

Hmm... I suppose I could look into it. It certainly would make my days off more relaxing.

[ and maybe he could get a rabbit, rather than a cat. Something fluff and cute. ]

You said you had a cat?

[A rabbit is probably more Liam's speed, but it's likely more Ken's, too.]

[Ken lightly nods.]

Yes, a friend of mine had several go to her during a curse.

[ he has a sudden flashback to the tribbles and he shivered ] Ah, that's... I think I'd much rather pick my own out then, thanks.

Huh? That's the best way to do it, pick one out yourself. Isn't it? I picked him out myself, though I was cursed, too. [Normally, he might have picked something quieter. But the cat turned out to be a good fit.]

[ his smile turns wry ] I'm glad it worked out well for you then. [ he paused and then leaned his elbow on the table. ] Why would a curse want you to pick out a pet?

[ he frowned ]

Is the City working for us or against us? [ that is the one question he has never found an answer for ]

Ah.... It was more like I was cursed to be very young. And my younger self didn't want the cats to feel unwanted, so I picked one out.

I almost think the City does both. While I can't be positive, in some ways it seems to help the individuals here. And in others it seems to harm them. It could just be a matter of perspective, too.

Younger then... [ he coughs, to cover up his faux pas ] Never mind all that; I think you may have stumbled on something there. It would certainly explain why some and not others were pulled here.

Perhaps we're pawns in the midst of some larger game?

[ and for whatever square they land on, a different curse is enabled. It's enough thinking to give Liam the shivers. He positively hated chess!

[A light blush.] Yes, I'm eleven now. So I think I was five, then.

...stumbled on? If we're being used as pawns, they could have at least asked before doing something like that. Trapping us here, against our will, is wrong enough.

[Ken isn't terribly fond of the idea. He used to be good at chess, while the Digimon Kaiser, but now, he might not remember how to play.]

[ Liam raises his brows at that little comment and then smiled faintly, shaking his head ] Ever so rarely do the pawns ever know they are being manipulated. It's in the nature of the pawn not to know what they're being used for.

It makes them vastly more effective.

[ goodness knows he's known his share of the manipulated. It took him years to figure out the rivalry between Barma and Rainsworth. And it wasn't a rivalry at all. ]

[Ken trembles. He's been used before, and the results were devastating to himself, everyone around him. This line of thinking is, clearly, getting to him. When he does speak, his tone might be sharper than Liam's heard before, though it's still low.]

I know. But that doesn't excuse any of it.

This is still just a hypothesis, though. Is there anyway, you think, we could prove or disprove this?

[ that certainly does catch his attention and he quickly puts down fork and knife to give Ken his full and undivided attention. ]

Short of asking the deities for information -- or worse yet, trading for it -- there's no way to prove or disprove it. The deities themselves may not even be aware of what they're being used for. The knight on the board, so to speak. Or perhaps the bishop...

[ he'll need to think further on this analogy. It certainly did bear thinking of. ]

[A trade? Ken does consider that for a moment.]

Asking wouldn't get a straight answer out of them, anyway. And there's no guarantee they would even answer if a trade is presented.

And, if they're knights and bishops, who would the queen or king be? [An even more unsettling thought. This isn't the first time Ken's heard speculation there's someone above the deities.]

Are you seriously eating your coat?

Would you rather I eat the silverware?

I don't care. [It's not like she even knows you.] It's just...aren't you going to need that?

[And how can you stomach all that sweet stuff? Ugh.]

[ he smiles engimatically ] Oh, that won't be a problem. This is Leo's. [ Vincent's he wouldn't touch with a six foot pole ]

...how does Leo feel about you eating his coat?

[ he burps ] He left the City two weeks ago. [ He knows; it's a tragedy. He should have informed everyone immediately ]

Oh. [Guess that's okay then?]

That's a lot of sugar...

[ he shrugs ] My friend could eat this much and the vest to go with it.

[ he pauses ]

He may have even eaten the table. [ oh Break... he misses you so! Just not how much money you cost him constantly. ahem ] I take it you are not partial to sweets?

[Bleeeeeeech. Yeah, her feelings are obvious.]

It makes me feel kinda nauseous.

[ his lips twitch up in a smile ] It's certainly not for everyone. [ at least Korra won't have to worry about the dental bills ] I admit, I only have a passing fondness for myself. It just seemed like the appropriate thing to do today.

I guess...

[ he spears another button, eying it contemplatively before nibbling on a corner. ]

It does seem like a rather strange curse though. I can't imagine why anyone would want to to live in a house full of sweets. Just think of the mess when it melts.

[ but for today, Liam will simply accept the inevitable. And if he must move out, he must move out. He would much prefer not to, however. ]

Not really something you have to worry about in the winter, at least.

One can always put on a heater. [ otherwise where is one going to live? Wait. ]

Although you do have a point. Ice skating would be rather fun, wouldn't it? [ he may be an old man, but he's still spry! ]

[ he wipes out a handkerchief, dabbing at his lips before using it to gently wipe off the crumbs from the lollipop table. ]

You've never ice skated? It's really quite easy once you get used to it and it's great exercise!

Perhaps, once it snows, I could show you?

No, I've ice skated. [Her entire home is made of ice, yo. She just isn't following you train of thought.]

Do you think it'll snow soon?

[ his smile broadened ] Of course. If it follows the usual trend, we should expect snowfall within a month. [ or so he's read ]

It may get chilly, but last year, I enjoyed the winter season very much, especially just after a fresh snow fall. [ ah... and that first cup of coffee! It was the absolute best. ]

[ he sighs ]

It's not the first time they left, but I admittedly had hoped [ he'd go with them ] they would have returned by now.

I've heard time acts real different, sometimes they come back not knowing they've been gone.

Regardless, it appears I'm alone for the moment. It's been suggested I take a pet.

[ although, honestly, the three were almost just like pets. If it wasn't for him, they would have been out on the street! ]
