[ the ring of a cash register sounds as Liam's voice comes over the speaker phone. ]

Thank-you, but I'll just carry that out with me. Ah, but that second one you can wrap up! It's a gift for a... [ can he even count Elliot as a friend? ] an acquaintance. I failed to help him as promised so while this won't make up for it, I do rather hope...

[ a low laugh echoes in the speaker as the shop lady does as asked ] It's often the thought that counts. I do so hope your acquaintance enjoys the handkerchief. Please come again, sir.

[ Liam deprecates ] Yes, I do so hope he does. Until another time then.

[ another pause and then the tinkle of a bell echoes as he exists the shop. Anyone wishing to catch him will find him strolling through the city, a brown paper parcel under his arm and a cup of tea in his hand. Ever since he discovered it's portability, he's never been with it. ]

As a reward for saving the prince's life I was made his servant. It seems a little backwards to me, but I suppose most people would be honoured. Sadly, the prince is an obnoxious, pompous, patronising prat and considering I'm basically juggling two jobs I always seem to be buried in work.

But it's not all that bad, I suppose.

It is a position of [ ahem, definitely hiding a smile ] high honor. May I ask what your second job is?

[ he always finds it so fascinating what things people choose to learn. And too, one never knows when such information will be invaluable... ]

[Yeah, supposedly it is. He doesn't really care about the status said position has, at all, though.]

I'm the assistant of the court physician. I guess it's the least I can do as thanks for him taking me in.

It compliments the position nicely. It would serve you well to learn what you can although...

[ and here he does smile, almost laughing ] I do hope you find time to rest. [ Merlin must be a thoroughly trustworthy man. Where one learns to heal, one also learns to poison. ]

[Plenty of that time is spent on trying to keep Arthur from dying or the kingdom from getting thrown into ruin, though.]

But there's always something. Clean the leech tank, Merlin, do the laundry, Merlin, sharpen my sword, Merlin, polish my armour, Merlin, clean the room, Merlin. And if there's nothing, I need to be around in case there is something. If I actually do wander off, my guardian tells the prince I'm in the tavern and I get even worse for it.

[ his lips twitch up into a smile. Ah, such good memories of no time, endless scolding and... wait. That still happened. :| ]

Sometimes, I think they do that to keep us out of trouble. [ or push you into it, deliberately. ~~Damn you, Rufus!~~ ]

Or get themselves into it. At least Arthur does. The prince, I mean. He has this funny tendency of giving me more tasks whenever I try to warn him of possible dangers!

[ That does surprise him. ~~That you, Elliot?~~ ]

He never listens?

Sometimes he does, but I guess the things that I figure out before anyone else are just very hard to believe. You'd think that after so many times of being right he'd start listening more, but no.

[He shrugs.]

He's just too dumb.

[ a moment of silence as he ponders what it would be like to follow an idiotic master rather then one with all the knowledge of a thousand spies gathered up and stored inside his head.

Or he may just be blind to certain things. Or is it with everything?

[ Liam almost says it affectionately, after a moment of thought. Xerxes was blind to the most simple truths sometimes. ]

Well, not everything, just a lot of things. As it should be, sometimes! But I think it's probably a matter of pride otherwise. Not wanting to admit someone might understand something better than him?

[Another shrug.]

He must still be a good man though, if he makes you worry. The rest, well... Wisdom does come with age.

[ Age certainly helped him learn how to handle Barma better if not perfectly. There was no perfect where Barma was concerned. ]

He's got a heart of gold if you dig through all the crap surrounding it.

[Arthur does keep getting wiser and wiser, so age does him good.]

[ he laughs, good and loud ]

They do like to hide it, don't they? It's up to us to make sure it shines. [ although he's not referring at all to Barma. It's only Xerxes Break that's on his mind now. ]

Yeah, seems that way. Can't let themselves seem weak, after all.

[He shakes his head lightly, and... Oh, maybe introductions are in order.]

[ he smiles and bows politely over his phone ]
