[Studies in body language say that's a sign of interest being peaked. But Mae doesn't read those studies, except once out of boredom, so she doesn't look into it.]

So how is it like, to be a doctor at the weirdest place you could imagine?

It's... [He struggles on the wording for a minute.] weird. But weird's been in my job description for a while. When I got here I spent some time at a clinic in the underground - that was a crash course in acclimatisation.

Yeah, I'd bet. [She leans forward, elbows on the table, cup in her hand.] You don't seem like the underground dweller, to be honest. Was it illegal to practice for you, when you got here?

No. [Something in his expression flickers away from the easygoing, for a moment.] Why would it be illegal to practice?

I still go down there, sometimes. When I arrived it was just a good place to get away for a while.

Well, [She shrugs.] I don't know, since underground, and that's usually a euphemism?

What were you getting away from? The City?

Except in a city where it's a location. You're right, most of what they call doctors down there haven't seen a license in years. I renewed my board certifications eight months ago.

[His mouth curls into a light moue, considering how - and if he wants - to explain.]

[Ah, people. She let's it go. Everyone has moments like those, where running away and hiding from problems just feels safer; Mae will call it strategy, but she hasn't been able to run away from her problems in what feels like ages now. So there goes that.]

I didn't know there was a place to renew them here. But I guess there's a lot more bureaucracy going on than I thought. Congratulations, albeit belatedly.

[No he hasn't, he's been here three years and counting. It's seven months since he lost (most of) his memories after a brief (three year) trip back home.]

Real world certifications. From the real world. The city doesn't have a medical council, so I find those more reassuring.
