It's called the City. I've been here for... almost two months now. Don't remember how I got here, either.

By a carousel, of all things. These uniforms really weren't made to blend in, were they.

Not particularly, no. People around here are used to all sorts showin' up, though, so not many'll look twice.

[ There's a pause, even as he keeps moving to get to the carousel. ]

Most everyone's from at least two hundred years in the past, if not more.

I haven't seen Jim or anyone else from home in two months, Lieutenant.

You really believe we travelled back in time?

No.

This place, whatever it really is... People show up here from all over. There are people like you an' me, there are people from over two hundred years ago, and there are people from plants I've never even heard of.

[ a pause ] I know we're trained to deal with extraordinary situations, but that's one hell of a lot to take in.

[ Clearing his throat. Hi Uhura, he's here. ]

[ He gets a wry smile. ]

No one else from the Enterprise is here?

Not unless they've all just showed up here like you did.

[ He's trying not to let on, but... damn, is he glad to see her. ]

Does that happen a lot, people just showing up here?

[ It really is a lot to wrap her head around. ] And you've been here for two months?

That's how most everyone gets here, as far as I can figure. There are some folks -- deities, or so they say -- that seem to run the place. Every few days something weird happens; people call them 'curses'.

What do these deities want?

No one knows.

Considering the curses, though, I'd say we're either amusement or experiments. Or both.

Right. Okay. [ Deep breath, straightening a little. If she's taking a page out of Spock's book right now, well, who can blame her. ]

Is there anywhere we can go that isn't next to a carousel?

I've got an apartment.

[ It's up to her if she wants to go there or not, though. ]

I guess if you're stuck here, going native is the only choice.

More or less. The hospital gets some interesting cases, at least.

More interesting when you consider the technology I have to work with. [ Here, he'll offer an arm. He's gotten used to a Victorian-era teenager holding onto it. ]

Do people understand one another, if they're from- everywhere?

[ That earns him a raised eyebrow, but she takes his arm anyways. ] Lead the way.

They do. Somehow. I'm still working that part out.

[ He's from the South, Uhura. He may be friends with Jim, but he's got manners. ]

Could be some sort of universal translator.

[ Apparently so. ]

That's likely. If these "deities" can turn people into animals or put cursed mistletoe all over the city on top of taking us here, some translating probably isn't out of their realm of expertise.
