[It's the ocean! The waves are tumbling and pretty decent today, and the device is on the sand, recording a slight figure in a blue and black neoprene wetsuit catching a wave and riding it, getting in the pipe, and then barreling out the other end.
In another minute she's coming out of the water, laughing - yes, laughing - and shaking her head to get the excess water off. She moves so her device, sets her surfboard upright in the sand and unzips her wetsuit down just a bit to get more sun.
When she speaks, her accent is a touch more Australian than it ever was, with the Namibian still in the background.]
There's a fierce curl out there today; Scholar would love this, I know I'm taking as much as I can out of it. Why isn't anyone else out here?
[She flops back, then remembers why she's out here. She grabs her device.]
I woke up and the hostel I'm staying at [she doesn't remember getting there or where she is but she's sure she's at a hostel] had this huge collection of shoes, so I put them out. I figure the owners will turn up and get them, because they're not mine. If they were mine I would have given them to a charity shop, they look pretty expensive.
[She flops back again]
Come on, someone come out here! The water's grand!

I'm dirty, not strawberry.

I don't hang out with psychos.
[She starts to read the menu]

[He's sure of his order but glances over the menu anyway, grumbling lightly.]
But I'm going to end up going to the prom with a jerk, in an ugly dress.

A guy like you? No way. You'll end up wit the most popular guy in a beautiful dress.

They have some great juices, if you didn't want to eat.
[Because usually he barely sees her take more than a bite. It can't be sustaining.]

[She looks up at the waiter]
Can I have a breakfast sandwich with hash browns, eggs over easy and a banana smoothie?
no subject
[Eyebrows, meet hairline.]
Um. Raw juice mix, beef patty stack with cheese, egg, pineapple, onion, and beetroot, thanks.

[The waiter interjects a cough and Chase snaps his menu, hands it up.]
I think that's enough for starters. Thank you.

Juice fasts are for California girls. Trust me, I'm not one of those.

I've met some bigger ones from Jersey. But I hear Texas has everyone beat.

[She reaches over and takes a packet of sugar and dumps it in her water]
But I guess since I was mostly raised in Africa, I'm have odd views of what constitutes skinny. I'm not worried about my weight.

All right, we've established that you're not on a juice fast. And that you have a beautiful smile.
[He clasps his hands in front of him on the table.]
How old, when you left Namibia?
no subject
Thirteen. My father retired from the service.

Must have been some upheaval.

Did you grow up in Australia?
no subject
[Transition. He leans back to accommodate plates the side of bike wheels being laid out for them.]
Until I was eighteen. Same city, same house. [Not as stable as it sounds.]

[She shrugs]
Did you like it?
no subject
[Hardly a leap, Sherlock.]
It was a nice house.

[She looks him over and takes a sip of her sugar-water]
But not a home?

[She's not always so gentle about lines of questioning, but she hears the block, and doesn't press it]
Are you telling me you're not interested in my accent?

[He smirks, breaking the yolk on his egg over the burger.]
