Look—I dunno what you're used to back in your world, but I hear monsters down there get pretty bad. If you wanna check it out, there's gotta be somebody who knows the territory who can go with you.

I do understand your concern and I greatly appreciate it. It's a rather selfish request, I realize, and I will not hold it against you if you decline to provide the directions on how to get there.

Unfortunately, the clock is still something I would like to see for myself, with or without the dangers accompanying the trip.

[ he stops, pauses, hesitates. all the things. god, he's clearly terrible at this. ]

What're you looking for down there?

[hornblower]

At this moment, it is only the clock that I would like to see. I've no intention of wandering elsewhere.

[errandry]

Yeah, but I mean—you just got here, right? It's not gonna tell you the way out. What do you want to see it for?

[hornblower]

Should there truly be a concrete reason for it?

I've never expected for it to provide me the way out. I've been informed on how the difficulty and unpredictability of an individual getting out of this city. And even if it does provide a method on how to get out, I'm not one to abandon everyone else.

[ considering she's nothing to go back to. ]

Just a pretty big risk to take for no real reason, that's all.

[hornblower]

Hence my wish to go alone.

... how's that supposed to work?

[hornblower]

The risk is great, I understand. Even more if I bring companions. They've no reason to risk their lives and safety for a trip that I selfishly requested of them.

[errandry]

Anybody—explained how death works around here yet?

[hornblower]

It is impermanent, is it not? The deities bring those who died back to life. And yet death is death all the same.

[errandry]

Right. So—there's no point if that's what you're after. Or anything.

[hornblower]

There is. No one will mourn if I were to die once more unlike the others.

I do not fear dying. I have gone through worse after all. It is not knowing anything that I fear more.

[ a pause then she shakes her head. ]

But I understand your hesitations, Kazu. You are very kind and I have been very selfish. Don't worry. [ she smiles wider. ] I shall not force you to say anything anymore about the clock.

That's not what I—look, it's not like I know a ton about what's down there anyway. But I know it's dangerous, all right? And—it's not like anybody oughta die just 'cause they don't have a reason not to.
