Just realized that last week, on the sixteenth, it's been two years since I got here. Next month I'll be thirty-nine years old. Just has me thinking about time, I guess. How it flies, how sometimes it feels like it's standing still. Will I still be here when I turn forty? Forty's a big milestone, at least to me it is.

I've seen people come and go, accomplished a lot here. I like that I can help out on the police force when they need me. I'm pretty damn proud of this Youth Center. Kind of wish Xander had been able to stay to see it completed since he helped me start building it. Met a lot of good people here in the City. Seen things I never would have believed were possible back home. I guess here isn't so bad. But what I wouldn't give for more time with people from my home. One of those things you take for granted until you don't have it, I guess.

Anyway, two years. Guess we'll see if I stay around for another one.

It certainly does. Though perhaps at times it does not feel as long. I have been here for nine months now.

Yeah, doesn't feel that long but... dates don't lie.

Hey, I was just talking about you to someone. Uh... Pavel? You know him pretty well?

Pavel Chekov. [ a little smile. ] He is from the same world as Doctor McCoy, who was here for a while. We talked during the visitor's day, and again now that he is here for good.

[ a beat. ] What did he say?

Forties isn't so much different from thirties, other than you're taken even more seriously than before. Which may or may not be a good thing, depending on the person.

Guess you've already hit forties then? You sure don't look it.

I turn forty-five in the next month. I like to think it's my relaxing lifestyle.

It's... weird to have been here so long.

Yeah, it is. Definitely doesn't feel that long.

Sometimes it feels like nothing.

Other times it feels like forever.

Yeah, depends on the day, I guess. Today is one of those days where it doesn't feel that long. Probably because of the realization that it's actually been two years. It'll wear off eventually.

Also, forty is a huge milestone. You look good though. With the being forty. Nearly forty. Whatever.

Time flies, huh? Yeah let's not skip thirty-nine just yet. Forty can wait.

Two whole years... yikes. You've done a lot of good with your time, though--there's something to be said for that.

Yeah, today that feels like it shouldn't be that long. Doesn't feel like two years. But then there are some days that it feels like it's been a lot longer. You know you were one of the first people I met in the City, long while back... when you were here before, I mean. I know you don't remember that but I'll never forget it. You were pretty patient with all of my confusion and anger.

I was? And you were? Angry, I mean. Not that it's not okay to be angry, but you seem so mellow.

Oh I've got a pretty good temper on me when the situation calls for it. Being abducted from home? Yeah, I'd say it called for it at the time. I wasn't happy about it. And you were still pretty sweet to me even though I probably wasn't the best company.

[He sounds slightly horrified. Nine months has been, thus far, the longest anyone else has mentioned staying in the City. There is a significant difference between nine months and two years.]

Does it concern you, the thought of losing all of this time once you return home?

Yeah, two years. Hell of a long time if you think about it. Although sometimes it doesn't seem so long.

But I try not to think about losing all this when I go back home. Got friends and family there. Friends here. I don't know, either way you're losing something unless you're really lucky and have people here. Come here, lose people from home. Go home, lose people from here...

So it does not bother you, or it bothers you no more than the City does. [He clearly finds this interesting.] I cannot imagine losing two years' of knowledge.

I don't know if I would say it doesn't bother me. There are things possible here that I would never have believed back home. It's crazy. But I love my people back home and I'm not sure it's a fair trade to not have them in my life for all of this impossible made possible.
