Just realized that last week, on the sixteenth, it's been two years since I got here. Next month I'll be thirty-nine years old. Just has me thinking about time, I guess. How it flies, how sometimes it feels like it's standing still. Will I still be here when I turn forty? Forty's a big milestone, at least to me it is.

I've seen people come and go, accomplished a lot here. I like that I can help out on the police force when they need me. I'm pretty damn proud of this Youth Center. Kind of wish Xander had been able to stay to see it completed since he helped me start building it. Met a lot of good people here in the City. Seen things I never would have believed were possible back home. I guess here isn't so bad. But what I wouldn't give for more time with people from my home. One of those things you take for granted until you don't have it, I guess.

Anyway, two years. Guess we'll see if I stay around for another one.

It certainly does. Though perhaps at times it does not feel as long. I have been here for nine months now.

Hey, I was just talking about you to someone. Uh... Pavel? You know him pretty well?

Pavel Chekov. [ a little smile. ] He is from the same world as Doctor McCoy, who was here for a while. We talked during the visitor's day, and again now that he is here for good.

[ a beat. ] What did he say?

Seems like a nice kid. Think he's pretty fond of you.

[Derek has his match maker hat on, obviously.] Can't say I blame him.

[ Smoothing down her dress. It is always nice to hear that people are fond of one, of course, and Tessa is pleased. ] I am glad for it. He is someone I would like to call a friend, I think, even though we are from such vastly different times.

Hey, that whole time difference could make it interesting. Things he could learn from you and vice versa. I invited him to stay here longer even after he gets some work. Thought maybe you could use the company.

[And get closer to him all at the same time. Derek wants Tessa to have good people around her so that she's not taken advantage of.]

Oh, it is certainly very interesting. His time is so different from what I know. There are different planets, and different species. Even people who are green. [ And they are all accepted. They're not monsters. ]

You are very kind to me, M— Derek.

Green people... yeah that does sound pretty different. There aren't even those, that I know of, in my time. I mean they may be out there, but we haven't seen them yet.

And you deserve it, Tessa. I know you've had some losses recently and I know how much that sucks. Hope he's a good friend for you. And I hope you know that if you need anything all you've gotta do it let me know.

Yeah, little green men is kind of the stigma we give aliens in my time. It's all fantasy, of course. But in the movies and on television, they're almost always little green men.

[He knew she had lost both Tim and Bones in a relatively short amount of time. Which is why he'd been worried about her lately. Without her consent, he really tried to watch out for her without being too entirely overbearing about it.] No, it's never easy. Seems there's always a good amount of people coming as there are going though... like Pavel. He's relatively new to the City, I think. Could probably use a good friend like you.

He said that they were not little men at all, but beautiful green women. And no one cared that they were green, or different. [ Even if it is another world, it gives her hope, teaches her to accept herself for what she is. ]

I wish that it were not so, but then that is not wise, either. [ She cannot pretend that they did not leave. Swallowing dryly. ] I would rather live a painful truth than a pretty lie, but that does not always make it easier.

I should like to be friends with him.

Forties isn't so much different from thirties, other than you're taken even more seriously than before. Which may or may not be a good thing, depending on the person.

Also, forty is a huge milestone. You look good though. With the being forty. Nearly forty. Whatever.

Yeah, it is. Definitely doesn't feel that long.

Yeah, depends on the day, I guess. Today is one of those days where it doesn't feel that long. Probably because of the realization that it's actually been two years. It'll wear off eventually.
