[Behind the Youth Center, past the basketball court there are several massive oak trees. Awhile back, Piglet had asked about carving out a tree trunk for a home for himself. And that's exactly what Derek is spending the morning and into his afternoon doing. Having picked one of the trees close to the center out, he's slowly but surely carving out the hollow of it to fashion what will be the first 'room' of the home for Piglet. This is exactly what the video feed shows him doing from the perspective of the device he's left sitting by a toolbox just a yard or two away. Anyone is free to bug him, both in person or over the device.]

Did the tree do something wrong? [Surprise, there is a princess nearby!]

[Derek looks back to Euphie, smiling at her just because it's always nice to see her. Then he shakes his head and goes back to carving.]

Nah, just a good size for a home for Piglet. He really wanted a tree to live in. I figure we have all these back here, we can spare one.

Oh? I didn't know that pigs lived in trees... [She is not a country girl, but this sounds wrong.]

They don't usually. But Piglet does. This place just keeps breaking the mold, doesn't it?

I suppose they don't typically talk or get sent to cities in alternate realities either. I probably shouldn't be surprised about something like a tree.

Oh I think I got it. Not a whole lot of room for two people. Thanks for offering though. Eventually I'm gonna make some furniture and stuff to put in here too. Might could use some help with that when I get to it.

Okay! I'm pretty good with sewing if the furniture needs anything sewn. And good with decorative burning.

[Derek's eyes light up a bit. Cause that's exactly the kind of help he would need. He doesn't know the first thing about sewing.]

Curtains? Maybe some pillows. Do you know Piglet?

I do, indeed. I can make that stuff for him, no problem. Let me know when everything's carved out so I can check measurements and all.

[A scrawny kid with curly hair--Derek might recognize him, as he likes to spend time with Tessa--watches him carve away at the tree, curious, hands behind his back. Don't mind him.]

[Derek notices the young boy a few feet away out of his peripheral vision. He's seen him around but hasn't had a moment to chat with him. He continues to carve as he poses a question.]

You do any wood work?

[He responds with a tilt of his head and a very thick Russian accent.]

No, sir, but I admire those who do. Not just wood work--creative things.

[The accent is almost so thick that it's difficult for Derek to follow. But he gets the gist of it, and prepares himself to listen closer to the conversation so he doesn't misunderstand anything.]

Yeah, I just like changing things. If I can keep changing things in some way, I'm good. This is gonna be a home for someone, believe it or not.

Someone is going to live inside of a tree?

[Good time for a water break. Derek pauses in his work to look into the video of the device and grab his water bottle.]

Carving out the hollow of this tree trunk. There's a City resident that's used to living in trees. Thought it was time he had a home like the one he describes from where he's from.

Someone lives in a tree? Are you serious?

Yeah, believe it or not. [Derek chuckles a bit.] You know, this place has all the weird and crazy. But when you meet Piglet, which you should sometime cause he's a nice little guy, you'll see how small he is. Apparently he had a tree house back where he's from. I'm trying to build him something similar here.

Nah, just carving, not building a dam. And I... don't think I'm cursed today. But sometimes I guess we're cursed without knowing it so... I'm mostly sure I'm not.

[Buffy wanders by the youth center a bit early for class and sits down on one of the steps to watch Derek a moment.]

Well now that I've found a handy man, I'll have to make a list of projects.

[Derek chuckles at that and shakes his head.]

How are you with banisters because I've got one that needs to be replaced.

I can do banisters. Been sliding down them too much, huh?
