[Jack is standing in the square, looking up and around at the City and then back down at the Vortex Manipulator on his wrist.] Oh, come on. You had to malfunction now? I mean you've done it before, but...

[Another few brisk taps at the wristband.] Work! If you don't work, a lovely second in command named Bernard is going to be very disappointed when he's stood up. And seriously, of all the places...

[Another sigh as he looks around him again. No way had he wanted to come back to Earth yet. It had been a couple of months but all that guilt he carried still felt as if he'd only acquired it yesterday. He wasn't ready to be here on Earth again. At least it seemed Earth-like...]

Well isn't this nifty? And convenient... [He spots the device and eyes it for a few accessing moments before picking it up. It's rare that Jack shies away from alien technology so he he instantly begins to fiddle with it. The video comes on to a brightly smiling Jack.] Ah, there we go. Captain Jack Harkness here. [And since he knows his smile is impressive, he nods his agreement with what others obviously must be thinking at the sight of it.] I know.

Seems I'm a little bit off course from where I intended to materialize. Malfunctioning Vortex Manipulator. Anyone care to put me up for the night while I work on repairing it? [A glance to his left at the coffee shop and then an arched brow back into the video screen.] I'll be sure to con you a cup of coffee for your trouble.

So you don't remember being here?

[Give him a second. He's staring at the video screen like he's seen a ghost. Cause well, he's pretty sure he just has. All the color drains from his face and his lips are parted in a momentary loss for words.

Until he finally recovers, kind of.] Tosh. [Something weird is definitely going on here. And of course his mind is going to the worst case scenario of aliens taking over human form by using the bodies of the dead. So his next question has him treading very carefully in a dead serious kind of way. Because his worst case scenario means someone is messing with his people. And he doesn't just allow that to happen.] Alright, what's going on? What are you?

[Tosh realises belatedly that she should have expected that reaction from Jack - not that there's anything she could have done about it. Still, asking what she is catches her a little off-guard. She hadn't thought of that herself; she'd just accepted that the deities - who or whatever they are - could transport people to the City and fix them up again. It's a little disconcerting.]

Jack, it's me. This place, it's a little...strange. Gwen and Ianto are here, too, though.

[Strange doesn't even begin to cover it. But now he's suspecting that maybe The Doctor has something to do with it. He's here after all. And he does mess with that whole time thing. Maybe they're in the past and this really is Tosh and she doesn't know that he will eventually do things that will lead to her death. In which case, he's going to smile at her over the video. A nice big smile and give her a proper greeting.]

Toshiko! You ever have a feeling that you're out of place? I've been all over through time and space and it's strange, but I never had that feeling until right now. And it's really good to see you. [That doesn't quite get his feelings across.] No. I love seeing you.

[Tosh can't help but grin back at him - Jack's smiles are infectious like that. She rather suspects that he thinks she doesn't know about her death yet, but she's not going to enlighten him. Not now, anyway, not while he's still adjusting to things here and he's clearly so happy to see her.]

I'm glad to see you back here, too. It's been a rough couple of weeks for everyone - and that was after the City got sort of...separated into two different dimensions. It's already some sort of multidimensional nexus, you see, pulling people in from different universes, as well as different points in time and space, and there are these strange curses that change people from time to time - the Doctor and Rose and I all got caught up in one right after the City went back to normal, and -

Well, you'll see. It's difficult to describe, and I've only been here a month or so myself.

[He still isn't entirely convinced. She sounds like Tosh, looks like Tosh, but his mind is just too muddled with losing everyone to so easily accept that this is really his Tosh. The thought that something is walking around wearing their skin though, just makes him irate. So he tries to stay calm and focus on what she's saying, how helpful she's being just as Tosh would be.]

It does sound like a mouthful, all of this. Luckily we've dealt with difficult things before. I'm not so sure I like the sound of these curses though. They sound very curse-like which is rarely a good thing.

[And a random test.] Hey remember that time we got pulled back into 1941? Great time, wasn't it? That... green dress you were wearing? [He knows it was purple.]

Some people were trapped in giant bubbles a few days ago. It seems like minor curses happen every two or three days around here, with larger things happening less frequently.

[Tosh knows what he's doing, and she barely keeps from rolling her eyes.] It was a purple dress, Jack.

Oh yeah, purple. How could I forget? [He offers her a small smile, making it obvious that he knew and also relieved that she got it right and corrected him.] You look good in purple, we all know that. In fact, if you had a signature color, I'd say that was it. You always wore it on important days.
