[ Dewey is visibly a few years older than usual today. On most days, he's ten years old - but today, he's thirteen. That may not be much of a difference, speaking strictly mathematically, but at those ages it's definitely noticeable.

What he has done on this lovely winter day is bundle himself up, take his portable keyboard, and head to Xanadu with it. Year-round spring, regardless of weather? He still loves snowball fights, forts, and the like, but this is a nice break to have from the City's winters - far harsher than he's used to. When he gets there, he finds himself a bench, unbundles himself from his winter gear, and takes out his keyboard from its case (it's far less burdensome when he's this size). And then, he begins to play: ]

[ ooc: Video is long, but you get the idea if you don't feel like sitting through it ♥ replies with older icons will come from [personal profile] betteratlife. As far as he knows, he arrived in the City at the same time he actually did but was older to begin with. ]

[Jinora, aged up mentally and physically, retreated to the warmer part of the garden early in the day to meditate. The music--and it's not music she has ever heard--encourages her to take a break and investigate.

She'll just sit in Dewey's general vicinity and listen until he's done. Interrupting is rude.]

[ While he does notice her sit down, his attention is far too occupied by his playing to stop and acknowledge her arrival. He could continue to play without paying complete attention, but if you're not fully engaged in the music, what's even the point then?

But when he does finish, at last, he glances up and offers a small smile. ]

Hello.

[She smiles back.]

What kind of music is that?

Classical. It's Mozart.

I haven't heard of him. At home, we don't have classical music. [That's what happens when a culture is almost completely wiped out!] My uncle and my grandfather were exceptional flute-players. Do you know how to play that?

Not really. I mostly just play the piano.

What kind of music did they play?

And you play it exceptionally well. I'm impressed.

Folk songs, mostly.

[ He smiles, shrugging off the compliment even though he's delighted to get it - it's always nice to have your talents appreciated, particularly when said appreciation is rare with the people who should support you the most. ]

Thanks.

[ And he moves right into the question. ]

So, music from where your family came from?

Kind of. My grandfather had to make some parts of the old songs up since he was the only one who was alive to remember them, but they're close to the music that the Air Nomads used to play.

[ He nods. ]

Music is like that, though. You know. It keeps its meaning from where it came from, and then it grows and changes along with people. So it's yours, but it's also connected.

[Cain soaks up the music with a strange sense of longing. Classical music is the closest thing the conventional world has to the music of his universe, and, the opportunity to hear it is something Cain is more than happy to capitalize on]

Well played, young man. [Cain offers in a rare moment of genuineness and he has a warm smile on his face as he beams towards the camera]
If you keep at it, with your skill, you could be a great master someday.

[ That gets a small smile out of Dewey. He's pretty confident in his skill, but it's always nice when someone else acknowledges it. He doesn't always get that back home. ]

Thanks. [ He shrugs. ] I should work on composing, but I just felt like playing today.

From the little I know of the craft, it seems the two often go hand-in-hand. I was once told: "To make music is to put your spirit on paper, and to play it is to bring that spirit to life". I think that the man who told me that was more right then he knew. [He grins]

That does sound about right. And, I mean, you have to play to understand how music is put together and all, why things work together or don't, how feeling is conveyed.

And sometimes it's just the kind of thing that you either get or you don't.

Demyx has been fairly excitably anyway, since returning to the City. But he's always had a connection to music, so when he hears a few bars, faintly, he decides to go and check it out. He's avoiding using his portals today, because one, he's been told off way too much about it recently (you see, he can learn), but also because he can still hear the music when he's not in the passageway of Darkness.

He grins as he reaches him, listening. This sounds kind of familiar; he listened to a bunch of Classical music in the music shop the last time he was here. But this is way better than one of those CD thingies. He's picked up some things from being in Time Bomb, and he applauds when Dewey finishes.

"Hey, Awesome!"

Dewey glances up with a small, slightly sideways smirk. He's proud of this - it's a talent that's his and his alone, one that his stupid genius brother can't outshine. Even if it's not often acknowledged by his family, he is confident in it, and pleased by recognition.

"Yeah. I know."

Okay, so not the most gracious initial response - he is a little smug at this age - but he does add;

"Thanks."

Demyx doesn't really care about how un-humble Dewey is; he's in a band with Curt, subtlety is not exactly a common trait.

"You've been playing for a while, huh?" He's not really asking. He can sort of tell this isn't exactly the first time his hands have touched a piano.
