[Sam looks intact, if a little worse for wear. He spent a few days wandering, helping people out, checking in on those he could find. Eventually he caught up with Dean. Now he's trying to work out what's happened, and what they're gonna do about it. There's something a little stilted about him, mechanical.]

Anyone who's got information on how we get out of here, I'm compiling anything I can find. In the meantime, anyone still out there who needs help?

And hey, if we talk on a regular basis, and you can see this, and we haven't since this whole thing started? Really like to hear your voice.

[Before he loses someone else.]

[That's good enough. Sam hugs her briefly, with one arm, and lets go.]

Guess it happens around here. I just... Wish I could be sure she wasn't lost somewhere. I thought last time was the worst, but... now I can't decide.

[It's still the worst, watching her burn up in front of him, her eyes wide and staring at him. But the uncertainty eats at him now. And the knowledge that she didn't just go back home. She's dead. Again.]

It does. I lost Dawn for a few weeks. She just...went home. Came back and didn't remember being here. That doesn't make it any easier on those of us who get left.

Heh. Guess I've done the same thing. Only... I wasn't supposed to ever see her again. I had her here, for months. Like it was supposed to be, before...

I don't know if that makes it harder or more 'I know I should be grateful but'.

[There are times she feels the same way about a much younger than her time wise Angel visiting on visitors weekends.]

[Sam shrugs.]

Maybe it just is. Doesn't matter whether it's harder or easier. You choose what you can, but some hands, you're dealt. Anyway... Sorry. I spent a couple years trying to forget. Not her, I mean. Trying to forget how it felt. Losing her.

No, it's--ramble. Sometimes it helps.

[She takes a deep breath.] The City can be really cruel sometimes. You've got friends here though, and people to talk to so...I guess I'm telling you, you're not alone.

[He looks over at her finally, trying a smile on.]

Thanks. Guess I'm less alone here than I've been in a long time. Even without her.

[She glances around them at the camp everyone has set up here.]

I think that's the nice thing about the City. We're all in this together.

[Sam nods.]

Yeah. I mean... Maybe it's sort of pessimistic, but I would have expecting more in-fighting. But people always seem to pull together.

No, I get what you mean. I think it's because no one here has any 'turf'. We're all displaced. I mean back home, someone would have been fighting but here...most of the time, we're all good.

[Sam nods.]

Maybe you're right. Though it's weird... for awhile there... this was more of a home than anyplace I had back, well, home.

And now it's less home and more punishment?

Punishment? [Sam shrugs.] Maybe. A little. Certainly not home. And worse than... No, I don't mean that. I'd rather have had them here for awhile, than not at all.

Except it hurts when they're gone. I get it.

[She puts her chin in her hands and sighs.]

[Sam glances over at her, finally pulled out of his own thoughts enough to think about someone else.]

Has that ever happned to you?

[It's all right, Buffy doesn't mind really. She shrugs a bit and nods.]

Sure. I've been here nearly two years. It happens to everyone who sticks around. [She pauses, gnawing at her bottom lip a moment.] I had a boyfriend. He went home. It was good though. He was never really happy here. [She takes a measured breath.] Dawn even left for a little while.

[Sam thinks about Dawn being gone. And after everything he's learned, he can only make on parallel.]

As much as I love Jess, I don't know what I'd do if Dean left.

[It's a decent parallel to make.]

Yeah, it's a whole other level of the sucks.

[He can't help but smile, just a little. She has quite the way with words, she and Dawn both.]

That's one way to say it.
