Well, the weather is acting normally again. There's just something so weird about a warm winter. I mean, it doesn't seem quite right, is all.

You know, it's a funny season...does anybody know why peppermint is so popular in the winter? I would've thought that with it tasting cold and all, it would be a big thing in the summer when it's hot and people need to think cold. Not now, when it's chilly already.

...it has such a nice smell, though, I will give it that...

[Anya goes quiet, as if lost in thought. When she speaks again, it's very distant, as if she's not sure where it's all coming from. As if she's not fully aware of what she's saying.]

...peppermint...there was a bottle of peppermint hand oil, it belonged to...to somebody important.
Somebody special...and one time, I spilled it all over the carpet. It was soaked, and it forever smelled of peppermint!

[She smiles to herself, shaking her head.]

I refused to let anybody wash the carpet out fully. To keep the smell on it, you know. And oh, I use to lie on it when she was away, missing her so, and--

[She blinks suddenly, eyes wide, and she shakes her head rapidly, confused.]

I'm sorry, what was I saying? Something about mint and winter, right?

[She shakes her head again, looking confused and concerned...like she'd said something important and lost it.]

Well, I guess that's good...I guess. I don't like not being able to remember, but I suppose its for the best.

[She shrugs and smiles a bit.]

We do! We've actually started a...well, an unofficial club of sorts. We get together, drink, share food...I think there's 3 of us who complain about the proletariat, too.

Yeah, he's in our group too! He's pretty cool, he let me borrow some of his things when I got turned into a guy once.

[It looks like a normal grin but there's a hint of something more behind it. Raikov, you perv.]

[She looks stunned.]

It sounded like it. You were talking about spilling some peppermint hand oil. It seemed to be a somewhat emotional memory.

[For a brief moment, she's happy, her face alight with awe and joy.]

[But the moment is gone, as quick as it came, because she remembered something, and she wasn't allowed to keep it.]

...except I didn't. Not really. I don't...I can't remember saying that. I was talking about winter, and peppermint, and then...I dunno, it was like I was off in a dream or something....and it's gone.

So the memory, or whatever it was, simply came and went without your conscious knowledge? You were talking about missing someone, someone important to you -- that must mean the memories are still in there somewhere.

I guess so...is that even possible? It was sort of like I dozed off for a second...I mean, I sort of remember something about peppermint, but I don't have all of it.

[But he's got a point there. The memories aren't gone...they're just stuck, locked away somewhere.]

So...I just need to figure out how to get them out. That's all...no big deal.

I'm no expert on the subject, but the way I see it, the memories came to you when you were focusing on something seemingly unrelated. It was as though you simply came to them through a stream of consciousness. Maybe another smell, another taste, simply discussing what you do remember, will allow more to slip through again.

That's not a bad idea. I'm willing to try it...peppermint was the trigger this time. Maybe some other food or something will set it off next time.

Make sure there's someone else there with you when you do it, though, or that you're sharing it with the network -- otherwise, you won't have any record of what you recalled.

Peppermint, huh? Really? I wouldn't have thought that that actually meant something...

Obviously it has some kind of strong significance to you. You might try smelling peppermint again, to see if it brings something else up.

I guess it does...I just wish I could remember why it was important. I'll try giving it another sniff, see if it triggers something.

I'm quite certain that once the memories start coming to you, you'll find it easier and easier to recall things.
