I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, but seeing as his presence in the City doesn't appear to be a temporary situation, you have a right to know who — and what — you're dealing with. Some of you may have already met him during the "visitors" weekend, wherein he was claiming to be Captain Jean-Luc Picard. He isn't. His name is Q, a member of an omnipotent race of being that exist outside our temporal plane. Under normal circumstances, the Q have unlimited control over space, matter, and time. They know what has been, what will be, what could be, and what should be.

This Q in particular has something of a soft spot for Humans, and has taken it upon himself on more than one occasion to teach humanity a lesson or two about the wonders of the galaxy. He's required reading for starship captains, and my crew has already been briefed on his appearances on Picard's Enterprise. We've also had the misfortune of having dealt with his... antics on more than one occasion. I urge you not to trust anything that he says, to keep in mind that anything he offers to do for you does not come without cost, that in all likelihood, whatever he wants to "offer" you will somehow be beneficial to himself.

He appears to be somewhat neutralized at the moment. Some of his powers are intact, but not all. He still poses a threat, could still turn our worlds upside down with a snap of his fingers if provoked or bored enough to do. I've taken it upon myself to keep him occupied, but he's something of a loose cannon and cannot always be controlled.

If you have any questions in regards to Q, do not hesitate to ask. My crew and I are available to assist in clearing up whatever messes and misunderstandings he happens to cause.

She doesn't think Q will hurt her because she's got emotional responsibilities toward his son. I have no idea how, but yeah. Like when Marcus beamed Carol off the ship so he wouldn't have to blow her up along with us, Q won't harass anyone else if Captain Janeway's in the way.

[ To the screen: ] Which is illogical as hell, before he says it, because Q will do whatever he wants. You said so yourself.

[ truth is? she's only seen the boy once, and he was an infant she highly doubts remembers her. but she allowed q to assume she was from a much later point in the timeline, tricking him into sharing details of what his son thought of her, how the boy held her in such high regards, how he was indebted to her for helping him with his son. she doesn't know exactly how that went down, just that she's important to the boy. thus, if anything were to happen to her, it would reflect bad on the father who is already having trouble keeping his son in line. q wouldn't want to further damage that relationship by allowing something to happen to aunt kathy. q played right into her hands with that one.

as far as she's concerned in the here and now, it's not the boy's fault his father is who he is. nor is it his fault he's got a mother who isn't interested in his upbringing, a continuum that fears him and what he stands for, that he was conceived for political gain. all of that was out of the boy's control, q or not. it's hardly anything to hold against a child — so yes, she's a little emotionally invested in him. she is his godmother, after all. ]

I did, but I'm one of the exceptions to that rule. I'm not saying that to inflate my own ego, because there are a million other things I would rather be doing than teaching Q how to brush his teeth. He values my life because his son does. [ among other things... how many times has she said "stay out of my bed" since he showed up? ] That works in my favor.

[ chakotay was right when he said she was underhanded. never underestimate her ability to fish something out of someone only to use it against them later. ]

[Since he and Jim appear to be in total agreement on the matter, Spock settles, stoic as ever, and lets the captain handle it. Janeway doesn't seem to be getting the point that they're trying to help, and the argument is becoming circular. Maybe she knows a Vulcan's side of it too well, but Jim has ways - unpredictability counts for that much.]
