[ Functioning. It applies to both his own body, and the communications device, but sadly not his powers. He'd worn himself out trying to zap himself back out of this miserable existence, and now Q was suffering--suffering from a bruised ego, a sore head, and - perhaps most unfairly - a grazed knee. Mortal, but not not Q. Trapped, but not wholly aware how. And the ticking of the clock is making his headache worse. A most disagreeable state of affairs. And now here's his face, at first much too close to the camera, and then withdrawn to a more reasonable distance, revealing Voyager era command red, and four pips at his collar. Not for a moment does his scowl subside. ]

Oh, I'm sure you think you're very clever. Do you have any idea who I am? You'd be well advised to send me back where I came from immediately. Otherwise--well, I can't be held responsible for what might happen. [ Not from him. Oh, no. But the Continuum might have something to say about it. Or his family. At least he hadn't actually fallen into the fountain. He'd come close, but with at least some small part of his once magnificent power available, he'd saved himself the splash at the last second. He leans back, inspects the fingernails of his left hand disinterestedly. ]

Well? Hurry up. I haven't got all day. I'm getting bored.

[ Why does he get the feeling he's dancing with the devil here. ]

[ That isn't Kirk's fate, but Spock's. In the...what was the human word for that? Prime universe, at least. But there were other universes; parallels, mirrors, a million what ifs. The kind that blinked out of existence when a single thing was changed, and others that did not.

Q steeples his hands together. Mischief flickers to life in his expression. She's interfering. Goading him, indeed. Well two can play at that game. ]

What is it that Kathy has been keeping from you, Jimmeny?

I have no idea what you're talking about and frankly, I don't want to.

[ Knowing his future would be ... morbidly fascinating, but it might drive him nuts. Paranoid. Besides, he isn't Prime!Kirk — the past weekend proved that well enough. ]

Oh no. I have a strict honor code, you see. You told me your fascinating truth, now it's my turn to return the favor. Kathy does like her secrets. Let me tell you one of them--my treat.

[ She's going to actually kill him, even just for the suggestion, but it's worth it just to see whether Kirk is willing to take the bait. ]

Oh, now that's just unfair. Why must every Starfleet captain I meet cast such aspersions on my good character?

Jean Luc Picard. But don't get me wrong, I favored one over the other. Why, Kathy and I are much closer than that. She didn't tell you?

[ He'll store that name away for later. ]

I don't suppose she mentioned the love sonnets, then? My serenading her in her bath? The time she woke up beside me?

[ Ruins everything. ]

Hmph. Wooed by a Q; you would have thought that very nearly topped her list of achievements.

[ He's just stung that Kirk doesn't give him more of a reaction, all in all. It is what he wants, and the end result is a sullenness that looks like it's because of something else entirely. ]

Why, I feel positively hurt.

[ He lifts his hand exaggeratedly, and there's a bright flash, and here a tissue with which he dabs at his dry eyes. If he knew his power was limited, he might have been more flashy, but a tissue it is. ]

[ A tissue has never given him cause for concern before, but there's a first for anything when it pops into reality like that. ]

What are you, exactly?

[ Much more like it. Q leans back, head tilting ever so slightly to the left. Janeway really didn't mention him. Well that was her mistake. ]

I told you already. I'm Q. Perhaps you'd prefer a simpler answer, for your simpler brain. Q is who, what, and when I am. Timeless, ageless and entirely irrepressible.

'Q' doesn't mean anything to me, you could be pulling illusions out of your ass and I wouldn't know any different. What is a Q? Are you matter-based, energy-bound? Psychic?

Right now it sounds like you just live a long time and get bored enough to magic up tissues.
