seven ✚ timeworn

[ Even though it's a Saturday morning, Scott McCall had a full day planned. He had a breakfast with Stiles on the books. Those are top priority, even at this age. He was going to birth a horse shortly after. (Someone has to do it.) He'd planned on taking a few hours at the clinic because some of his favorite owners were on the books. They knew not to expect him every week - or every month, even, but he's in Beacon Hills for an unspecified amount of time. Dropping in on Deaton's practice has to happen. It brings back memories. He sees himself in the younger kid working there. It's hard not to. Innocence and bright eyes. A kid that hasn't seen the world yet.

But, all those plans change when he wakes up not in his old house. He never sold it. It held too many memories. He doesn't live in Beacon Hills full time, but he can't bring himself to sell it. Even though he's told over and over, this is a seller's market. Not that it matters now.

The room he wakes up in is the room of a teenager.

He's not sure. It's a poor kidnapping because the bedroom door is unlocked.

After he finds his network device and sorts himself out, he addresses everyone. The face is older, a lot older than they're used to. But, he's fine with it. It's him. For those relatives and friends not in the apartment this morning they're in for quite a shock. ]

I get it. It's like a conference call on Skype. [ He looks impressed. ] My name is Scott McCall. I have a few questions if anyone out there can oblige me. Two minutes. It's all I need.

How is this possible? [ Forgetting the where, the City, his questions. ] It's really you. [ It's been years but he'd know his mom anywhere. She was his rock. For years. She'd encourage him to expand to wildlife. He had a thriving career, partially because of her. But, let's be honest here. She's older. Not dead because, hello, young mother but - he's in his early forties. She doesn't look like she's in her seventies. ] What's going on?

[This is actually making her a little teary-eyed, because it's pinging a long-suppressed fear: the fear of never seeig him grow up. The life he lived was so...dangerous...]

I...You're in a place called The City. We've been here for about a month now. It's kinda complicated. But you're about twenty years older than I saw you last night.

Mom, are you okay? [ Please don't tear up? He worries immediately. ] I'm twenty years older. [ He takes that in. ] We've been here a month? [ How? What? ] You know I trust you but this doesn't make any sense.

I'm just fine, honey. Promise.

I know it makes no sense. I said the same thing when we first got here.

I'm at the hospital right now, I was just about to go to lunch. Come join me, I'll fill you in as much as I can.

[ Well, he doesn't have any better offers and this is his younger mother. Still working at the hospital. Not the Beacon Hills hospital - but the hospital. ]

I'll find my way there. [ Wait. ] So, the room I woke up in. That's mine. [ No wonder. ]

Yep. It was. And I'm sorry I wasn't there to notice.

The address of the hospital is [address!]

[ He takes the address and like the intelligent veterinarian he is, he finds his way there in about ten to fifteen minutes. It doesn't help that it's a big hospital. He finds one of the nursing stations at least.

He turns on his network device again. ] Hey, I found one of the nurse's stations but this place is huge. I'm by the stairwell.

I'm on my way.

[And she aapears not five minutes later, coming through a fire door. And she stops short.]

...God. Time is already passing too fast. This is making me feel old.

[ When she appears, he turns to face her. It's his mother. Subtracted twenty or so years. ]

You're not old. [ She wasn't. He never saw his mother as old. This is weird. But, he comes forward and he hugs her. ] I'm old - er. [ He's not allowed to say he's old, then his mother is old and his mother isn't allowed to be old. ]

[Not really able to help herself, she steps forward and cups his face with both her hands. And she smiles.]

Look at you. Wow. It's...amazing, really.

What do you want me to tell you about? You filled me in here first, only right I return the favor, huh?

Amazing's one word for it. [ What does he want to know? Try this. ] How did we get here?

Very good question, one we're still in the process of answering? Some people say deities? Others think it's magic. I honestly have no clue, I woke up here just like you did one day.

But we're here, and we're building a good life here. You're in charge of an animal clinic. All by yourself. At seventeen. I'm really proud of you.

No shit. [ Sorry, he'll pause. ] Way. Sorry. No way. [ Even though he's clearly old enough to swear and do a lot of other things. ] I have a clinic. Awesome.

[She chuckles at that, shaking her head slightly.]

I'm sorry, but if at your age you still can't say "shit" in front of your mother, I know I've done something right.

And yes, you have a clinic. It's still not totally finished, but it's yours.

You're doing everything right. [ His way of implying she's still alive. ]

How'd I get my hands on a clinic? Tell me people give buildings to kids here. Some people get maps when they end up in an unfamiliar place. Kids get buildings.

[She just smiles at that. Well...good. At least she's still around. She'd be crowding eighty, huh. Wow.]

That, I'm not one hundred percent sure on. I think it was donated to you, it used to be an animal shelter that nobody was using. Or it was being used, but it was in disrepair.

[ And looking sixty! ]

And I stepped up to repair it. Go little me.

So...you have to tell me more about you. I mean, where you're coming from, things must have changed a lot. Are we still living in Beacon Hills?

You are. I'm kind of living everywhere? I have a place in LA but I travel all over. I expanded into taking care of wildlife.

Why am I not surprised?

...Come on, let's not have this conversation in the stairwell. Let's go have that lunch. You can tell me everything.

Like if there's a possibility I'm a grandmother.

All right.

[ A smirk comes to his face as he follows his mother down the stairwell into the other floor. Little does he know that he's been to the cafeteria she's taken him to before. He's just content to follow silently and look around. ]

[She leads him to a quiet table in the corner, once they've gotten their sandwiches. And she pats his hand across the table. God, he's got his father's hands.]

So. Are you married? Are you single, are you still dealing with pack politics? Tell me everything.

[ He sits in the small plastic chair. Before he can pick up his sandwich is mother's hand is on his. ]

I'm not married. Never been. I'm single. Right now. I've had relationships. Everything is more on and off for me because I'm always traveling. Pack politics never go away. Turns out, even if packs scatter they're still considered pack. What else do you want to know?

Well...um. Part of me wants to know everything, but part of me also knows that's a bad idea.
