[ he's decided to spend the day at the beach. the cross-gates have been quite useful and despite not knowing how they function and being very curious as to that exact question, he utilizes one to get to the northern beach. once there, he settles into a more secluded place where he, hopefully, won't be found very easily and takes out his lovely little city-phone. ]

For all of the City veterans still here... I was wondering how often these curses hit, if there's any way to stop them, and if there's a way to determine the probability of one affecting someone.

[ not counting harry. chakotay's expecting harry to get hit by curses more often than not because that's just the way harry's luck runs. poor ensign. ]

Whatever the case may be, I think it's time for me to start keeping track of how many curses I notice. I wonder if there's a running list of them somewhere?

[ once that's all taken care of, he settles back for another attempt at contacting his animal guide. he's been having a difficult time of it, since his medicine bundle is back on voyager, but he's slowly been trying to gather up things that might help him with it here. it's difficult and strange, but it just might work. so he begins quietly, murmuring the ancestral prayer and taking deep steadying breaths as his eyes slide closed and he focuses on the items in front of him. they're covered by pieces of cloth, wrapped up on the sand in front of him, as he'd rather not have some of them be seen, and some are simply tucked into his pockets. this is mostly an experiment and he has no idea that soon enough a friend will drop by for a visit. ]

Scotty would come out on top, no one's more determined to prove they know the most about tech.

[ He can't think of an engineer who has more confidence in themselves. ]

I don't wanna bother your captain, she's done enough.

[ that just makes him chuckle softly. oh kirk. you haven't met b'elanna torres. or seven of nine, but seven cheats via her borg history and she's not technically the chief engineer. ]

If she's offering you this, take it. I don't think you quite understand how rare it is for her to do even this much. Kathryn's offering you friendship... and help. If she didn't want to have anything to do with you, your people, or how this whole thing turns out, she wouldn't have let you touch that phaser, let alone take it from her.

[ he pauses for a moment, ducking his head as though to shuffle something unseen on the sand in front of him before he looks back up and fixes kirk with an even expression. ]

She's a great ally, a fantastic captain... and a wonderful friend. She wouldn't consider herself being bothered unless she suddenly decides not to talk to you and I don't see that happening any time soon.

[ aka use her friendship, kirk. you might not get another chance like this. ]

[ ... Chakotay, your dedication to your captain is super sweet, gj. ]

It's not any of that, Commander. I just so happen to think I can eventually fix this myself if I put myself through the grinder first. [ Smiiiiling, and lightly adding; ] But it's nice to know Captain Janeway is every bit as deserving of that praise as I suspected she would be.

[ he is super obvious, isn't he? ]

I see. In that case, you might want to keep her away to spare your pride. [ dipping momentarily back into teasing. ] Otherwise she might take the project and finish it herself.

[ good job, kirk. you've gotten him to lighten up just a little bit. ]

She is. She's quite competent and I'm glad she's got a few people here to work with.

[ Only a lot, and it's unfortunate for Chakotay that a little Starfleet scandal appeals to Jim immensely. Chinning a hand, he raises his brows inquiringly (and doesn't he just wish he could do that single-brow thing Spock tosses around). ]

A while after we first met, we had a chance to talk over dinner. It'd be an idea to have all four of us — Spock too, I mean — go together sometime. Wouldn't it? We could catch up and stay in the loop.

[ no, don't. that'll remind him too forcefully of tuvok. bad idea. ]

That sounds like a good idea. Find somewhere you can talk freely.

[ he's totally counting the four as mccoy, spock, kirk, and kathryn. it'll give his captain something to do without her first officer looming over her shoulder and he can't see how that would hurt her chances of settling in better. ]

You don't have anything against Italian food, do you? I know just the place.

[ And Spock can go veggie to his heart's content. Not what you were expecting, Chakotay? ]

[ his brow furrows slightly. okay now he's confused. ]

As long as it doesn't involve fried food and has a vegetarian option, I'll enjoy it.

[ he and spock can bond over that. ]

I'm starting to wonder if all first officers have a secret vegetarian society.

Doubtful, but if one develops in the future, I'll let you know.

[ somehow he doubts riker was ever that into vegetarian selections. ]

[ he pauses for the briefest of moments. it isn't as though telling someone about his tribe's traditions is breaking the temporal prime directive, especially if he's keeping up the appearance that his tribe is currently located in central america. ]

I was trying to meditate, but I'm having a difficult time contacting my spirit guide.

[ Interested, Jim leans in as he settles to hear the whole thing. ]

Spock meditates in a dim room. [ Don't ask how he knows, it's a smallish ship. ] Maybe you could wait until the sun goes down, it'd mean fewer distractions.

I've tried. [ the problem with the dim room scenario is that most of the dim rooms he knows of are well within kathryn's path and being near her at this point is part of the reason why he needs to talk to his animal guide in the first place. ] I was hoping being away from the crowds in a less occupied place would help.

[ fewer people here to worry with him, fewer interruptions when he isn't taking a break to check his messages. ]

I guess it's just a little rougher here than I expected.

I'm not a wise old spirit guide but if you need to talk, I'm not in the business of spreading around secrets. [ He indulges a smile for a moment. ] Captain's word, besides that.

I can listen to whatever you need to get off your chest and I won't repeat it back to anyone from either crew, Commander. The offer's on the table.

[ for a split second, he actually gives that thought -- the irony of asking james t. kirk for romantic advice isn't lost on him -- but then it's gone. this isn't something that a talk can work out, and definitely isn't something that can be rushed. it is what it is. he just has to relearn to deal with it. ]

If it wouldn't break the temporal prime directive into tiny little pieces, I'd do more than consider it. [ but as it is... ] I appreciate your offer. I think for now... this is something I need to work through. Maybe another time.

Your directive, not mine, but I see where you're coming from. [ It hasn't been implemented yet for Jim, so he's considering it pretty flexible. ] If you can't get your head sorted out your way, we'll try mine. Meyer's bar.

[ it might not be kirk's, but it's a directive chakotay has to live by, especially in such close proximity to kathryn. ]

[ and he might take kirk up on that offer for another reason anyway. he gives an appreciative sort of nod in response. ]
