[ he's decided to spend the day at the beach. the cross-gates have been quite useful and despite not knowing how they function and being very curious as to that exact question, he utilizes one to get to the northern beach. once there, he settles into a more secluded place where he, hopefully, won't be found very easily and takes out his lovely little city-phone. ]

For all of the City veterans still here... I was wondering how often these curses hit, if there's any way to stop them, and if there's a way to determine the probability of one affecting someone.

[ not counting harry. chakotay's expecting harry to get hit by curses more often than not because that's just the way harry's luck runs. poor ensign. ]

Whatever the case may be, I think it's time for me to start keeping track of how many curses I notice. I wonder if there's a running list of them somewhere?

[ once that's all taken care of, he settles back for another attempt at contacting his animal guide. he's been having a difficult time of it, since his medicine bundle is back on voyager, but he's slowly been trying to gather up things that might help him with it here. it's difficult and strange, but it just might work. so he begins quietly, murmuring the ancestral prayer and taking deep steadying breaths as his eyes slide closed and he focuses on the items in front of him. they're covered by pieces of cloth, wrapped up on the sand in front of him, as he'd rather not have some of them be seen, and some are simply tucked into his pockets. this is mostly an experiment and he has no idea that soon enough a friend will drop by for a visit. ]

Often, no, and no but the odds are quite high.

There is no rhyme nor reason to the City's antics other than once a month there is at least one long weekend that always has random curses.

Got anything to do in your off time?

Making new phasers, mainly. Your captain helped me out with that, we're sharing equipment.

Then it's a good thing to hope that they pass quickly and don't cause too much mayhem.

[ wishful thinking, he knows. ]

So I heard. It seems you made a very good friend when you befriended her.

[ there's a bit of a double meaning in that if kirk cares enough to search for it. ]

You have obviously not been here long to think so.

[ All he hears is friend, so more of a lead will need to be given for Jim to suspect anything else. ]

I wish I had my chief engineer here to help me with this, Scotty could breathe on the damned things and they'd hop up to dance a Highland jig on command.

No one has tracked the curses, to my knowledge. Some of them are regular; most of them are not. There have been ways to be excluded from curses in the past. Not recently.

[ Behind him, the clinic can be seen, midway through remodeling. He's addressing from the front desk. ]

My best friend keeps a list of them. [ Curses, that is. ] And it seems like twice a week? Weekend curses last a few more days. Others, 24 hours. But, you think there's a way of telling why some of us get cursed one time and then not another?

There's a lot of data on them over this network, but that's incidental at best. I don't know if anyone's kept a database.

_{( he's been compiling one, though. he also wants to introduce himself, but calling chakotay "sir" over the network would be bad for subtlety. so he leaves it at that. )}

[And drop by for a visit she does, however unexpected it might be. She's flying, as she always does, because some days are harder than others and she needs to breathe and she needs the fresh air—and the beach is where she wants to go today because maybe she can go for a swim, too, just drop off her broom and straight into the water.

But then she comes across a familiar figure as she's heading out to the water and she'd sneak by (he looks like wants to be alone), but she's already gone and burst through the trees, so that isn't exactly subtle.]

I tend to keep as much optimism as I can about any situation.

No way to do any of that, boyo. You might get lucky and get a curse token, but without the deities, who knows when the next time those'll go up on the market.

He and our chief engineer would get along quite well once they got over the fight of who's in charge.

[ and he's not sure who would win. because on the one hand, b'elanna is half-klingon, but on the other, kirk's engineer was a pretty amazing one for his time. ]

In the meantime, you might be able to use Kathryn's expertise. If she's already offered you this much, she might offer to help you figure it out.

What kind of ways? I'm starting to think keeping some sort of track will help in dealing with them.

Scotty would come out on top, no one's more determined to prove they know the most about tech.

[ He can't think of an engineer who has more confidence in themselves. ]

I don't wanna bother your captain, she's done enough.

That's probably a good idea. They seem very arbitrary in length and variety. [ also frequency. ] I don't know yet, but I'm hoping to find out. It can't hurt to try.

[ no, that wouldn't be a particularly good idea, would it? for any of them, but especially the voyager crew. they're trying so hard to fly under the radar now, with khan around. ]

It might be worth looking into. At the very least, it's something we can look into, keep track of, and maybe use it to find a pattern.

[ he knows kirk's crew keeps growing here, but he doesn't know them by voice or else he would switch this to their starfleet comm frequency and save them both the trouble. ]

[ having someone burst through the trees nearby isn't exactly on chakotay's list of things to do today. in a flash, he's on his feet, his hand going to his pocket and clenching around his phaser out of pure habit before he realizes who it is. his hand relaxes and the phaser remains tucked away. ]

I wasn't aware this was a race track. [ his comment is light-hearted, joking, but he's still a little on edge and doesn't sit down right away. ] If I'd known, I wouldn't be blocking your path.

[ not that he's exactly blocking her, but he's somewhat in the way and may as well move to somewhere quieter if she's going to be blasting around out here. ]

A curse token? What are those?

It looks like a coin, I've got a pair in me sock drawer. It's just a coin, and you toss in the fountain or some shite like that when you're cursed something terrible, and bam. No more curse.

[ that just makes him chuckle softly. oh kirk. you haven't met b'elanna torres. or seven of nine, but seven cheats via her borg history and she's not technically the chief engineer. ]

If she's offering you this, take it. I don't think you quite understand how rare it is for her to do even this much. Kathryn's offering you friendship... and help. If she didn't want to have anything to do with you, your people, or how this whole thing turns out, she wouldn't have let you touch that phaser, let alone take it from her.

[ he pauses for a moment, ducking his head as though to shuffle something unseen on the sand in front of him before he looks back up and fixes kirk with an even expression. ]

She's a great ally, a fantastic captain... and a wonderful friend. She wouldn't consider herself being bothered unless she suddenly decides not to talk to you and I don't see that happening any time soon.
