[ Lucy's flat seems to have exploded. Things are stacked and piled seemingly at random. She's wearing a baseball cap backwards and she's got an old tee shirt on and cut off jeans. Her hair is in pigtails and there's a variety of cleaning products scattered about. She's right in the middle of a top to bottom cleaning and organization spree of her flat. She's sitting on the floor amongst a riot of books and knickknacks with a glass of something iced at hand. ]

Hi. So...this seems like an appropriate time to ask. I need opinions and sounding boards for likely highly illogical ramblings of the relationship kind.

What's wrong?

My boyfriend was gone, remember? Well he's back and I kind of broke up with him because he left and...I don't know if that was the right thing to do or not, you know?

You broke up with him because he left? [ But, it wasn't his choice to leave. ] Are you mad at him?

No. Not at all. I'm--I'm mad at the City. I'm mad at them for screwing with my life. It's not enough that they pulled me away from home and all the people I love and that love me; they have to take away people I care about here too. I can't count the number of people I've lost that I care about in this place.

So, you're punishing him because you're mad at the City? [ That seems... mean. And pointless. ] Do you love him?

I'm not punishing him. I'm...protecting him. Both of us really.

[ it's not like that! well, she doesn't mean it to be like that. ]

Yeah. I mean...if I didn't I wouldn't be doing this.

You're protecting yourself, too. This way, neither of you gets hurt again. But, why stay apart because of that? You get to have him for who knows how long now. I'd take every day I could get.

Even if you know it's going to hurt and you're going to cry yourself sick in the end?

Well, I'd want him to be happy. If he's happy with someone else, then he's happy. But, keeping you two apart and breaking up with him. That hurts, too?

Yeah. It hurts a lot. Both of us, I think. It's just that at least that's my decision and not...fate or the deities or whatever.

So, you get to decide if you're together. Even if it's you making yourself unhappy, you're unhappy.

I mean, I guess he has some say in it too...

You mean, because he didn't put up a fight.

No. He kind of did. I just picked a really bad time. I should have been more considerate. [ in her breaking up with him. ]

Because he'd just gotten back?

Yeah and I'm pretty sure things had been rough at home.

What are you gonna do?

I don't know. Talk to him, maybe? I mean...it's not worth making any kind of decision if he's not okay with giving me choices, you know?

Talking to him is a good idea. Maybe listen. See what he wants. What happens if he doesn't care, if he's fine with losing you one day? I know about walking away. I was with my girlfriend Allison on and off for a few months but stuff got bad. She went through some stuff. Blamed a friend of mine. She lost her mother. Her family hated me. By the end of it, we just both knew we had to take time.

[ She thinks about that a moment ]

So everything worked out until you arrived here?

No, we're not back together. She went away for the summer. But, we're friends.

I guess that's good. The still friends thing.

It is. [ They'll always have a connection, even a deep one, but it is better this way. They can't be together and they know it. ] Are you going to talk to your boyfriend?

I think so. He wants to talk so...that's...worrisome, but it could also be good. [If she'll just embrace the here and now and not worry about the future. ]

Maybe it can't get worse? Since you already broke up?
