My people have been given the run of the City Labs via my authority, Captain James Kirk of the USS Enterprise, at the discretion of the anonymous faction that rid the City of its former captors.

That means anyone who wants to get some actual work done can report here to sign up for the Starfleet Program. Physicists, engineers, sciences, medicine if you're interested in expanding your field — all the sections are going to be geared toward improving our technology and getting us out of here. I've had a look around and for twenty-first century restrictions, it's not too bad. Let me know who you are and what you specialize in, so I can keep track of who's going to be coming and going from the facility. You don't have to be a member of Starfleet to sign up for a job, but it's not exactly light work and if you're not a fan of doing things the hard way, I wouldn't bother. We might have to try building our own equipment from scratch, for that matter.

Oh, and does anyone know where I can get a cheap motorcycle from? Thanks. Also, Stiles, I've got some free time if you do.

[ not that she disapproves. it's true that protocol would support her in pulling that command rug right out from under his feet, but she's been content so far to provide consult and support, while gauging in silence just how this younger version of the kirk she studied in command school handles things. so far, so good. ]

I didn't realize you were into Old Earth recreational vehicles. [ though, perhaps she should've. tom likely would've been well aware of this fact from the get-go, but janeway had -- who is considerably dressed down today, having set her uniform and pips aside -- been interested in his career, not his personal life. ]

Had to call it something, at least 'Starfleet Program' should draw in any newbies who get yanked in here. I'd rather they came directly to us than flitted around aimlessly.

[ He shrugs and smiles when she mentions his latest intention to get a decent ride. Walking is only interesting for so long and he's never been a fan of getting anywhere slowly. ]

I fixed up a spokeless motorcycle before I enlisted, it got me around Iowa well enough. Still had wheels, but I kind of liked it that way. [ There's a pause where he takes in her casual appearance, though that's only while he debates going into further detail during a moment's pause. ] My dad left a red 1965 Corvette Stingray convertible to us. I used to wash it as a kid.

[ a nod, because she wasn't contesting his point -- it was well understood unsaid, but a few days isn't enough time to really get to know someone and their intentions, and she's still in the process of working out how much this kirk carries himself like his "prime" counterpart. just because she can guess what that kirk would do doesn't mean it's what this kirk would. ]

I found a 1936 Ford Truck adrift in space once.

[ in the delta quadrant. a truck that belonged to a man who'd been in cryostasis with amelia earhart who had, in fact, been abducted by aliens. ]

[ grin. she is so not kidding. it would've been laughable at the time if not for the overwhelming awe of being in the company of the legendary miss earhart. ]

[ Grinning right back because no matter how humanitarian and noble their profession is, their job is ridiculous. ]

I ... would. Sure, why not? [ He perks up as he remembers something; namely, an hour of cleaning his room, stripping his sheets and airing his bedroom out to let Janeway use it. ] I meant to ask, did you sleep well last night? I'll grab something to eat for dinner later if you've got any requests.

[ as she once told her operations officer, weird is part of the job. ]

About as well as I usually do. [ meaning she didn't. sleep and janeway don't usually go hand in hand, especially when there's something on her mind. (hence that cup of coffee she's nursing. he was correct in what he told his doctor before -- she does indeed run on coffee.) ] That's probably for the best. You haven't done anything to warrant being subjected to my cooking.

[ never let her cook. ever. she can't. it's the one thing she is truly terrible at. ]

[ Things Jim Kirk is rapidly learning: the couch isn't that uncomfortable, there always needs to be a ready supply of coffee in the cupboard and sharing a bathroom with two housemates is insane in the morning if he doesn't hit the shower around five AM. ]

On that note, don't look in the microwave.

[ the decision to call him by his name versus rank is an easy one. she addresses her own people by first time all the time, especially when they aren't on duty or donning uniforms. ]

[ a laugh, a shake of her head. suddenly she's living in a frat house with a couple of quarrelsome officers from the wrong century. ]

[ which was before she even gained command of voyager. she feels a little homesick for a second, but homesickness might as well be a part of everyday life for someone as far away from home as she is. ]

[ He's tired from finishing the search for Spock, checking out the City Labs and getting things shaken down to an acceptable level. The majority of his concerns are taken care of for now. ]

[ He raises his brows as he tacks the last part on the end, knowing full well what his own reputation might insinuate. ]

[ sadly, that reputation is all he's familiar with when it comes to your personal life. the other kirk's personal life. (this is why time travel gives her a headache.) she's more familiar with the life of carol marcus than anyone else who served aboard, or in close proximity to, the crew of the original enterprise, being both a fan of marcus's scientific accomplishments and having recently poured through some of the woman's logs and records when making decisions about how to handle omega on her own. ]

[ elizabeth is her middle name, but she's not about to give him that. her first officer doesn't even know that. ]
