[ captain janeway was certain of two things: one) there was no way of contacting voyager; and two) there were other federation signatures present in this strange, alien city that was eerily reminiscent of 20th century earth. neither served to please her, and she'd spent the better part of the morning trying to boost her combadge's frequency in hopes of setting up a homing beacon, but to no avail. she'd try again later, perhaps after dismantling this device she'd been saddled with, granted she could find anything worthwhile hiding beneath its infuriatingly pink casing.
as for those federation signatures... she was on the fence. while those frequencies possessed a distinct federation signature, they were also old and outdated, making use of a particular brand of waveform distribution that had been abandoned by starfleet before she was even born. the only reason she thought to scan for something other than the 24th century standard was her tendency to consider all possible variables, not just the most plausible. she'd come across enough in her time to not be too surprised by archaic federation frequencies, but wasn't so foolish as to trust them or assume they were really starfleet in origin at all. for all she knew, it was a cleverly laid trap, put there specifically to pique her curiosity and draw her in closer with a false sense of security and promises of home.
she debates contacting the source of those signatures directly, but ultimately decides against it, repinning her combadge to her chest and picking up the device instead. ]
This is Captain Janeway of the Federation starship Voyager. This act of hostility is unwarranted and without precedence. If we have done anything to offend you or have crossed into forbidden territory, I assure you, it was not intended, and we will do whatever it takes to reconcile the damages.
[ she shifts, sitting up a little straighter on the park bench she's laid claim to. ] In the meantime, I request to be put in contact with my ship. The sooner we clear up this misunderstanding, the sooner we can discuss opening the floor for diplomatic relations that do not involve unnecessary aggressive negotiations. [ why yes, that's a not-so-thinly veiled threat. ]

His hand covers hers with a brief squeeze of gratitude, then Jim turns his attention to popping a couple of fries in his mouth to distract himself from where his thoughts are going. ]
I'll be heading out after we're done here, I want to start checking the places Uhura might have missed. You're welcome to stay with us if you're still here by nightfall, Captain. [ He nudges Leonard's shin with a foot, warm weight resting against his leg as Jim's tired mood sets into his limbs. ] That's alright, isn't it?
[ It's as if someone put a warm blanket on simmering coals to even out his mood. ]
[action]
from a doctor and an observant's point of view, bones has a million reasons to be thankful that someone can put jim in his place, but as a friend, it's always nice to find someone who can calm him when he's feeling wroth. bones has had experience with that already, the loss of pike devastating in more ways than one. he's seen the worst of it happen and witness the descend into destruction after, and doesn't want to see it again. janeway, apparently, is the blessing in disguise that bones didn't know he's been hoping for ever since their arrival on this godforsaken city. ]
You're welcome to stay for as long as you need, Captain.
[ he says genuinely, although his eyes slide to jim's after that, flat and unimpressed. no, he's addressed janeway specifically because he's not at all happy about the first part. he doesn't kick back or react otherwise when jim kicks him, returning to his meal instead, letting him know without words that he's displeased at his decision. the thought to stop him seems useless at this point, especially now that another one of theirs - starfleet is a family, after all, all things considered - has been taken by the city again. ]
[action]
mccoy actually gets something of a grin out of her. ] It's been a while since I've shared quarters with anyone, but I'll adapt. [ a joke she knows is lost on people from the 23rd century, one that would not be met with as much amusement in the alpha quadrant as it would on her ship. they've learned to laugh at their hardships. it makes getting out of bed in the morning a whole hell of a lot easier.
and, since she promised kirk... ] I'm willing to meet you halfway with this examination you were demanding of me earlier. Any and all records pertaining to me, down to the very last scar, will be destroyed if I ever leave the city. There are going to be some questions I can't answer, and I'd appreciate not being pushed to stretch the boundaries of protocol any more than I'm willing to do so. If you can guarantee that, I'll give you your examination.
[ she can be an extremely reasonable woman -- once she's had her coffee. ]
[action]
true to his promise to jim, he agrees. although he's not satisfied in the slightest, he's professional enough - and no longer as pissed off as he had been that morning now that he's able to cool down himself - to know a bargain when he sees it. ]
I hope you're not going to be as much trouble as Jim, with his goddamn gargantuan list of allergies. Every day's an adventure with this one.
[action]
He comes back to the conversation halfway through eating his sandwich (newly layered with fries) when his allergies are being bitched out. Jim rolls his eyes. ]
I haven't eaten peanuts in ages!
[ Needling his point through a muffling mouthful, he sits up and finds his appetite has fully returned, topping up his coffee and adding a small roll of bread to his plate to make a fry-sandwich with. This meal's going to last him the rest of the day, there's no harm in stocking up.
Fuck Bones for always being right. ]
[action]
[ the scars are going to be the interesting part. from being on a borg cube when it was destroyed by species 8472 to firing photon torpedoes from inside the launch tube when the launch activation sequencers on the bridge weren't responding and there was no time to reroute fire command through the helm. ]
Chew your food, Mister Kirk. [ though she laughs at him, shakes her head. ] Who knew when I got out of bed this morning that I'd be sitting here with two of history's finest instead of reviewing crew evaluations.
[action]
Don't say that. It'll get to his head. [ somehow, he's not so surprised, though. when you've spent two consecutive years saving the world under captain james t. kirk, it's probably inevitable to believe it.
not that he'll say that within jim's earshot. ]
[action]
HAHA, TOO LATE.Smirking, Jim takes a huge bite of his sandwich and chews it with relish at Janeway's direction as he wrinkles his nose at Bones. History's finest!!! And because it's so ridiculous, so wonderful, he can't help but he tickled by hearing it be confirmed, albeit for the alternate Kirk and not himself.Swallowing, Jim clears his throat and wipes his hands off on a napkin, affecting humility that doesn't particularly hold. ]
Let's take creating a legacy to last through the ages one day at a time, shall we? Our friend's probably responded, we should make ourselves amenable to his dumb requests.
[action]
Might as well. [ reaching for the device, she flips it on again, listening to their friend's response, keeping it muted on their end. ] I think he may be confusing Einstein with Tesla in this instance, but that's certainly more than I was expecting to get out of this... rebel leader. What do you think, Captain?
[action]
I think he likes playing house with big words, but we haven't got much choice. I'd rather have the option open for my crew to work on something productive in the City Labs, whatever they're worth, than milling about behind a cash register. [ Spock would say it's a decent offer. ] Also wouldn't mind a chance to get stuck in there myself, see what I can do.
[ He might not be a scientist like Spock or anywhere near as good an engineer as Scotty, but he's still pretty damned bright on an aptitude test. Gesturing with the hand that falls from his lips where it's been pressed in thought, he nods after a moment's consideration. ]
I don't trust him, but I'm with you on the surprised front. Gets my vote.
[action]
I don't trust him either, but sometimes, you have to take advantage of what's being offered to you, even if it's not much. [ like being offered a tiny detour instead of a straight passage that would cut a few years off their journey instead of a few weeks -- but a few weeks were better than nothing. ] And, speaking as one of the physicists in question, I can work with what they're willing to provide.
[action]
but jim wants his opinion, so evidently, he has to give it. ]
It's logical - [ there's a look that he sends jim, like i hope you're happy that you've made me say that because i'm not. ] - but take their gifts with a grain of salt until you actually get to have a look at the place. They say that they have the equipment, but the question is how many of them are actually operational. Illudium Q-36 and atom smashers in a twenty-first century-based civilization? Fits like gloves on a rooster, especially when they can't even put an osteogenerator in the hospital ER that could help us fix up some of the patients real quick. The backwards technology offered there doesn't have the capability to heal them faster.
[ oh no, he's back to metaphors. he's so unimpressed. ]
Bless their heart if they do happen have them up and ready for you all. [ in other words: fuck 'em. it's your call, not mine, and thank god for that. ] Anyway, if all goes well, you might want to consider asking the other inhabitants for their help somehow. Remember that we're not the only ones stuck in here. I'm willing to bet there's a couple of them that've toyed around with futuristic tech. Probably has things to offer from whichever world they came from that isn't ours. They haven't been as enthusiastic as we are in trying, but that's because they've never been offered an opportunity like this. They could do with a little push, if you're willing to trust 'em.
[ which makes him look at the other two with raised eyebrows. are you? ]
[action]
Jim sits up and nods, taking back the citywide comm. ]
Let's make a new friend, then.
[ And so, he responds: ]
Thank you, I'd like to take you up on that generous offer. I'll lead the project myself and let my people know they can head over to the City Labs when they're ready, if anyone else from Starfleet arrives then I'll be sure to extend the invitation to all personnel.
[ Unless Spock arrives, he thinks. He'll want to take charge of the operations in the labs. Besides that, Janeway will more than likely make herself beyond useful and take over in the meantime, until she has someone with Spock's prowess to bounce off. If he ever returns, that is, and Jim feels guilty hoping he will. ]
Once we've reconvened and found our sea-legs, I'll contact you directly. [ The nod he gives the rebel leader isn't discourteous, but succinct. ] Again, we're grateful for this opportunity.

[ bones just sighs and goes back to his food, finishing the rest of it. ]
