— iece of crap. [ There's grumbling as the viewscreen jostles, bright blue (bloodshot) eyes squinting into it curiously. The would-be handsome face glances away a moment later, eyebrows pulled together; he's sick or was prior to arriving, more worn out from the exertion of walking than any young man ought to be. ] Alright, good. You'll do for the time being.

This is Captain Kirk of the starship Enterprise ordering any and all Federation crewmen to report back with the location of the nearest Starfleet outpost. I'm off-world when I shouldn't be. This "computer" — [ you can practically see the airquotes around his sour tone ] — isn't responding as it should or giving me the information I need. I'm getting nothing but interference when I try and open a standard sub-space channel, the frequency's all off ... damn, this thing's gonna fry if I keep messing with it.

[ Opening his mouth to continue, a hurk noise clogs his throat and hastily, the video clatters to the ground as Jim reels around to vomit into the fountain. Classy. ]

[ Of course, where a sick Jim is, a wild, angry Bones appears. ]

Goddammit, Jim! [ He's there all of a sudden, a hand on jim's shoulder holding him for support and a - somewhat crazy expression on his face. ] Jesus Christ, why are you out of the medbay if you're sick?! Don't move or I'll hypo your ass!

I'd rather understand how everyone seems to know us. I don't have time to be some smartmouth's nanny just because he feels like exercising the right to need one.

[ Rubbing his eyes, Jim sinks back down to sit on the edge of the fountain and take a steadying breath. Yeah, his headache's doing a number on him after waking up and walking around so suddenly. ]

Oh, for God's sake. Talk to Bones.

[ Migraine-induced jamming of the line here, sorry not sorry. Captain's got other crap to wade through. ]

Good. Thank you, Ms. Wallace, I'll be sure to do that once my people are relatively safe.

[Torn between rolling her eyes and narrowing them at him because what's more irritating, being called ma'am or being treated like she's expected to follow his orders?

Call me ma'am one more time and I won't feel so helpful. [Ginny exhales, sits back, thinks to when she knew him last—almost exactly a year ago.] Fine. Context. [Suddenly, she grins as she remembers:]

[ Last time he ever opts for manners, right there. ]

We've got no memory of any of that. [ Worrying as it is that they've been stuck here before, Jim sets that aside for now. ] How long have you been here, Miss —?

[ whatever Bones thinks of the situation, he doesn't say it this time. perhaps later, he'll speak to Kirk, tell him of the number of impossible things that can go wrong starting from the very top, but for now, that's not whatever any of them need. they're tired as hell, and jim is sick. jim literally said that he feels like he's just woken up. given their points in the timeline, if that's really the case, then bones will have to keep a closer eye on him.

in the meantime, he nods to Chekov. ]

If we can convince one of the doctors to let me in a second time, then that'd be great. Equipment's equipment. Thank you, Mr. Chekov. I do have a medical tricorder with me, but that thing is going haywire. Mind if you take a look at it for me? [ to uhura: ] I'll do your examination in the hospital. Provided that twenty-first equipment isn't going to be a pain the ass, it'll be over pretty quickly. You don't looked harmed, but I obviously gotta make sure of that.

And you [ he looks at jim very pointedly ] are coming with us. I'll check over your stats right after I'm done checking hers. I don't care if you want to wrestle with the big guys tomorrow. You just vomited into a fountain so you're going to let me do my job. If I find that you're not fit to work just yet, you're not fit to work.

[She studies him for a moment, almost frowning. Then - ]

Four and a half years. [Her turn to hold up a hand, sir. >| ] Doesn't happen often. Most people haven't got my luck, I only know a handful of us who've been here that long. [And there are probably more, of course, it's a big city and she doesn't know everyone.] I've been home twice but this place drags me back each time. And yes, I've tried to get out. Who hasn't?

Have you ever tried to speak to the beings holding us captive? Someone else said they monitor this network.

I have. They're cryptic as hell and I reckon they think this is a game or I suppose we're an experiment, too. A friend of mine had this theory that we were here because we're interesting.

[Ginny shakes her head, shrugging.]

Not that it matters now. Like I was saying to Dr McCoy, the deities're gone now, you just missed a proper rebellion—in case you were wondering why the place looks like a mess. We were all caught up in it whether we wanted to be or not.

[ He glances around with a nod. ]

Looks like something went down here. I've heard the usurpers are called Anonymous, is that the official name of the new big cheeses or isn't there anyone specific I can talk to?

[ ginny, he doesn't even know where to begin with that. ]

Trading your memories for items? This is sounding more and more like an idiotic game.

There's four of them that I've seen, two I've spoken to. Never caught their names so I expect Anonymous is all we've got right now.

[She pushes a hand through her hair, not comfortable with that even though she supported them.]

They've said they're working on opening up the City to get us home, fiddling with the barriers. Last time someone did that, we had bloody harpies attacking the place so even if they mean well, even though I fought on their side, I'm keeping an eye out. Best thing to do here. Seems like straight answers'll always be impossible to come by.

[Aaand eyebrow.]

Are you done interrogating me?

I'll have to look into that. [ he needs to find a way to examine, jim. what with the vomit and everything. ]

Is the technology - [ ancient ] - as outdated as this device?

Trading your memories for anything. I've heard of people trading them to give someone their life back, to get memories back... It's a big price so the payback's got to be worth it.

[She traded some memories for her age when she'd left and come back and was stuck as 16 years old again. Ginny grins, a faint and exasperated thing.]

Yeah, I'm sure it was a game to them. They called us ants.

[ Taking all that in (harpies, really?) he glances over when she starts to bitch and moan again. ]

Yeah, for now. You're annoyed because we were friends, I'm guessing, since you called me Jim. [ Something a grand total of maybe three people do back home, all of them deep in his confidences. ] Can you tell me a little more about that?

[Something in her expression softens and for a beat, she does look apologetic, then she has the good grace to blush, a wry grin tugging at her lips.]

You introduced yourself to me as Jim, the first time. Acting captain, though, so it sounds like you've grown up.

Huh. I've been the actual captain for a while now, growing up was a necessity. [ And a belated homage to someone who never got to see him do it. ] All the same, I'd prefer to keep things formal, I've got no idea who you people are. No offense.

[ he doesn't address that, knows it's useless.

he just sighs and sits beside him, a hand on his shoulder. ]

It took two weeks for you to wake up after that day, Jim. You can't do everything that you want to right now so just pace yourself. Someone mentioned that there's a hospital around. I'll get you some things that'll help when we get to it.

That would depend on the memories, I guess. [ bones can't think of any memory he'd want to trade, good or bad. not even the ones with the bloody harpy that used to be ex-wife. ]

[ Patting him on the knee, he offers a smile. ]

I'm glad you're here, even if all of this sucks. I need you.

[She traded her memories of having people from home with her in the City. :( But then they came back after a month, the deities never kept them for long.]

Ginny. Are you sure you want me to call you Leonard?

[Waving it off with a smile because that's the way of it here, even if it sucks (always sucks) to have one-sided memories. Sometimes it's like the time never happened.]

If I got in a strop every time the City did its little City thing, I'd have set half the place on fire by now. [Said so cheerfully, too.] Captain Kirk it is. But I'd rather you stick with Ginny, none of this ancient ma'am rubbish.

God help us all if you actually get stuck in the twenty-first century without me. You wouldn't last a day.
