[ Laden with grocery bags -- right down to the stereotypical loaf of French bread -- Hei turns into the street near his apartment. No matter how often his neighbours titter that the store delivers, that there's no need to schlep, Hei insists on dragging his shopping home so he knows what's in every bag. He walks slowly, cheeks ruddy in the coolish air, his long open coat flapping behind him. ]

[ And, at the familiar voice rising and falling between strums of guitar strings, stops. ]

[ What. The. Fuck? ]

[On a whim, Korra had swung by Hei's apartment to see if he was there and say hi. She didn't even make it inside. Hei's neighbors were once again sitting out on the stoop. When he saw the guitar, the old man demanded a song and, cursed, Korra couldn't help but oblige. One thing led to another and when Hei reaches his apartment, he'll find Korra sitting outside with the couple, being taught an old drinking song.]

[ Music is just one of the many things Hei doesn't care for -- a superfluity that serves no function in his life. That's not to say that he's tone deaf, or that he's impervious to the mood is stirs up -- it's part of human nature to be attuned to some kind of rhythm, after all. But there is truth to that saying. Anything too stupid to be spoken is usually sung. (It doesn't help that his singing voice is all tuneless bass at best, a flat roar at worst.) ]

[ Bags held in both arms, he stops at the stairs. Bemused, a little apprehensive, completely focused. The song Korra's belting out is so old it's near-prehistoric. Even so he recognizes a good majority of the verses. His embarrassed blush is manufactured mostly for the neighbour's sake. But his frown is genuine. ]

Is this a serenade?

Oh, hey Li! [The old man guffaws at Hei's question, and Korra elbows him affectionately. Yes, they've become best friends already.] Mr Zhu was teaching me a few songs from his home.

[ Privately, the chumminess doesn't surprise Hei. There's really very little about Korra that would make you look at her cross-eyed. And Mr. Zhu does like to brag -- out of his wife's earshot -- what an eye for pretty girls he's always had. For all the good it's done him -- also spoken securely away from his wife's ultrasonic hearing. ]

[ The grocery bags rustle as he readjusts his grip on them. ]
