[When the device's audio feature activates, it's clearly not a result of any intentional action on Doc's part. There's a good deal of noise, amplified due to the fact that it's not close to the device, it's actually in the device. The tinkering cuts off when the device activates - there's a yelp and, if you happen to be observant, the sound of someone jumping back slightly. A dog barks.]

Well, I suppose that answers the question of what that particular circuit does, eh boy?

[Another - happier and less startled, bark - Doc comes back to reapproach the device.]

My apologies for the interruption - I can only assure you it's all in the name of gaining knowledge.

As a matter of fact, I am! Though I must say I'm finding it somewhat resistant to the effort.

I hope you will find a way to dismantle it. I've tried to take apart mine, but every time I try to tamper with the chassis, I've received a mild shock. They don't want to be taken apart.

It certainly doesn't seem to want me getting any further than I have.

I'm curious as to determining the specific means it utilizes to transmit, any clues as to the overall structure of the network itself, and - assuming that I do find a way inside of it - hopefully expanding my research to include some indication as to how precisely these devices are capable of activating seemingly of their own volition.

I hope that you succeed in taking it apart, although I have reached a point where I wouldn't be surprised if the devices operated by way of some kind of magic.

But then, magic is often something that can be explained but simply hasn't been.

Precisely my thought. Anything called magic still operates according to some internal logic, some law by which it must function. By that definition, it is certainly not beyond possible to successfully apply the scientific process in determining the nature of any "magic".

Presuming, of course, it does not lie beyond our means to define.
