[ A moment is all it takes for the world to change. The cacophony of the busy mid-day City has replaced the quiet privacy of Olivia's room, as she's pushed and shoved through a busy crowd. A man slams against her shoulder, nearly knocking the laptop underneath her arm to the floor. A woman runs into her heels. Her first instinct, amidst all this confusion, is to place her hand on the grip of her gun. A reassurance that wherever this is, she'll be ready for any sort of attack--

Olivia sidesteps the crowd, turning a full circle as she looks for those foreign, yet familiar markers: the twin towers, the floating Zeppelin - except what she expects isn't there. This isn't the alternate world, this is another world. Instead, she finds her eyes trailing across the gilded poles of that polychromatic carnival, that bubbling liar's fountain that decorates the square. It's like she's stepped into an amusement park. ]

Pocket and parallel universes? I'm not too familiar with the distinction.

Be surprised if you were. Most people are just familiar with the singular, much less the derivatives. Basically speaking a parallel universe runs in tandem with another one. Yeah, they're different and no, normally they don't interact that much with one another, but the basic historical timelines are similar. Except where they're drastically different, but the point is that they look like you'd expect parallel-but-different things to look when you line them up. Pocket-verse, whole different banana. Nothing has to happen in a pocket universe. It just sits there, in a pocket, anybody's pocket, doing whatever the person owning the pocket designed it to do. Personally I'd rather be in a parallel, but. [Shrug.]

So what you're saying is that somebody made this world? Who? Those deities? More importantly, how?

Oh, it's not that difficult to do, if you've got the resources. Though, normally it's more a case of literally re-sourcing some other world to suit your purposes. No, what's more impressive is how well they've cut it off from everything else. Keeping people, particularly people like me, because I'm very clever, here indefinitely, independent of even death? Some scary mojo.

What do you mean - independent of even death? And who are these deities - are they, what, scientists?

I'm a scientist, and whatever science they've got is out of a different set of textbooks. Not that there's only the one set, just that there's the one normal people play with and the one brilliant people play with and then the one crazy people play with.
