[ Short, to the point and very, very dry: ]

Happy first anniversary, Merlin, says the City.

[ And that's it, because only a few days after said "anniversary", a curse drove Arthur to kill him. He's not very happy about it. ]

[Charlie's seated on the floor of their room, scribbling and drawing in a notebook. She's been quiet since Merlin's murder and even after he came back, she was a woman of few words. She looks up at Merlin for a moment, nose wrinkled.]

It has been a year, hasn't it? [A snort of annoyance and it's back to drawing diagrams and writing lists in the notebook.] That was a very shitty gift.

A really shitty gift.

[ He's sitting on their bed, and rubs his palm over his face. ]

[There's a slight hunch of her shoulders and another glance at her husband, a bit nervous and uncertain before rising to her feet and walking over to sit beside him.]

Do you need anything?

[ He simply leans his head against her shoulder, shrugs. ]

I don't know what that would be.

[Charlie rests her cheek on his forehead for a moment, hand rubbing gentle circles on his back.]

Maybe a nap?

[She could use one. This week has been draining as fuck.]

Or we could try for a vacation somewhere?

No, I don't think a vacation will do any good.

[ The nap, though, that might be something. ]

[She needs a nap, too. Her gardening plans can wait. But she wants to help with what he's going through.]

What's on your mind?

[ He exhales - almost sharp and annoyed but... Mostly tired. ]

What do you think?

[It's hard to miss the obvious distaste, but as far as Ken knew, Merlin at least had Charlie in the City. The whole thing leaves him concerned.]

Are you all right?

Fine. I just wish it would have given me a better gift.

The City doesn't exactly think of the best gift ideas.

Too bad you can't return it.

Some things are. But not much, I suppose.

Do you need anything?

Even if it's just for me to leave for the night? [Not so subtle hint at the fact he gets adults like "alone time" with each other, sometimes.] I can probably go to the library for a couple of hours.
