It is said the noise bothers those who live alone. You should seek out a roommate, or a pet.

The ticking can be alleviated by the presence of either other people, or an animal companion. Look into getting a roommate, or a pet if that is disagreeable.

Ah, that's because the ticking starts when you're alone. But it goes away when you live with...someone, or have a pet around.
