[ Okay nobody panic, Rory's coming back. But Amy doesn't know that. So, have some denial and an obligatory sex post, really. ]

[So he comes inside, peering around the corner to find her.]

Alright? I mean, no, of course not. I brought you a -- [He brought whatever he had in his hands when he saw the text, which he is now actually looking at.] -- ...pparently a mostly repaired sequence randomiser, which I doubt you actually have any interest in, so nevermind.

[Whoops. Okay, yeah, how about a hug instead?]

Hi. [ She's sitting on the couch, fiddling with the device. Well, it's better than staring at the blank tv screen.

A hug would be nice. She'll even get up for a hug. ]

A sequence randomiser? [ Look, it's a distraction. Distract her. ]

[Good, because it's too awkward to give them to someone sitting next to you and he's going to sort of stand in front of the couch for a couple of moments before putting a hand down to help her up so they can do it properly. You need a hug, Amy.]

It... randomises sequences. I can find something more interesting. [And he hands it to her and starts looking in his pockets to do just that. There's bound to be something more interesting in his pockets.]

I wouldn't've guessed. [ All the dry tones. But hugging. Hugging is good. There might be some leaning in this. ]

Yeah, let's see what else you've got.

Yeah, it's not the most creatively named gadget. [He is putting all his hugging skills and mojo into it, so it'd better be a good hug.

He rummages around a little bit, pulls out a yoyo (always a yoyo. He barely even plays with yoyos. How is there always a yoyo?), robot parts, a couple of batteries, currency from somewhere else, chocolate - actually instead of the small pile he's making on the other end of her couch, he offers her some of that - and something that looks like a cross between a wind up toy and a gyroscope (which already to a degree looks like a wind up toy), before finally finding something he deems interesting enough to stop on.] Ah! There you are. [Also handed to her.

It's hard to tell if it's partially organic since it's got a bit of a warmish fuzzy fur-or-felt-or-maybe-suede-ish side, or if it's just made of something that approximates it well, but the other parts of it are man-made enough. It fits in the palm fairly well in the state it's currently in, and has some shimmery not-quite-colour thing happening.] How's that?

[ It is a good hug. A little bony perhaps, but Amy appreciates it nevertheless. And bony is somewhat familiar, anyhow, so that only makes it better.

She breaks off some of the chocolate and eats it, watching. ] Are your pockets bigger on the inside, too?

[ Peering at the thing inside her hand. ] What is it?

Of course they are. How else would all of this fit? Limit myself to the actual size of the pockets; you're mad.

[Because treating people normally is how you help them. He grins a little - explaining things! - and pokes at it.] It's got a long, complicated name, but generally it's called a hypgnotic. Hyper, hypo, not hippo. People thought for a while they'd help you learn things faster, sort of worked out like a pet rock for brainy people. They don't - well, they do, but not like people thought they did, which basically means they don't, even if they do - but they're nice still. Good pocket warmer.

'course I'm mad. [ He gets a grin. It's not quite up to her usual standards, but she's getting there. ]

Is it alive? Or really just a pet rock?

It's not actually a rock, and technically it's not alive by most standards anyway. I'd have to be a bit callous to be keeping something sentient hidden in my pockets all the time. Although if you do want to pet something a little more thoughtful, warm, and fuzzy I can go back to the flat and bring you a pair of bunnies for a bit.

Maybe it likes dark pockets that are bigger on the inside.

[ Pondering for a moment. ] Nah. If I'm overcome by the urge to pet something, I'll pat you on the head, how's that.

[ Settling down on the couch again. ]

[He has to pause and process that for a moment.]

I'm thoughtful and warmish but I wouldn't really say 'fuzzy'...

[He sort of falls in next to her on the couch, avoiding the pile of things.]

But if it'll help I probably won't mind. Oh! You know those little - [Hand gestures.] - those little fake pet things? Tiny electronic things you have to remember to feed and pet and parents used to misunderstand the entire point of a pet and think they were a decent substitute? It's like one of those, just a little bit less depressing about it, what with some actual reciprocation.

I don't know, your hair is a bit fuzzy sometimes I bet.

[ Sort of leaning her shoulder against his. Distraction and company do help with the hole that's Rory's absence. ]

Yeah. I never had one of those. Probably would've died way too quickly, anyways.

Fluffy. My hair is fluffy sometimes. It's not short enough to be fuzzy.

[Hair is a serious business. Obviously.]

They weren't really worth it anyway. Pixels and greyscale and teaching it tricks it never ever forgets and does all the time whenever you ask. It's almost better to actually have the pet rock. At least there's no falseness happening. Or, better yet, strangely, go out and make a real friend. [He really didn't understand them, okay?] Anyway, these are better. Were you not a good pet-keeper?

I don't know. [ Poking at a strand of hair with one finger. ] That looks almost fuzzy, right there.

[ shrugging ] Never had a pet.

[He bats her hand away.] Does not.

Well, they're not for everybody I suppose. I prefer things that talk back to you, personally.

Does too.

[ smirking. ] So you're saying we're all just pets to you, yeah?

Does not.

[That gets a snort of laughter.] Yes. Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Great big, wonderfully entertaining pets.

Does too.

[ Satisfied and smug. ] Well, that's all right then.

Does not.

Does that mean you like being pet? I wouldn't have thought you'd find that particularly appealing.

Does too!

[ eyeroll ] Future!you is my best friend, you moron. I know I'm more than just a pet.

[Clearly the verbal argument isn't going to go anywhere, so he instead opts for physical evidence in the way of reaching over to fluff her hair so he can point it out as being properly fluffy.]

I didn't say a pet, I said pet. Of course you're not a pet.

[ Amy bats at his hand, laughing. ]

I don't mind being pet.

See, that's fluffy. Or frizzy. Some sort of f-adjective. Could be fabulous, I suppose. Fantastic, frumpy, fuzzy. Fairly flamboyant. Fiery! Could be fiery. I'd imagine you probably get tired of that one.

How 'bout fierce?
