0180 : Beautiful

Last night was so wonderful!

I was scared at first because last time it was dark all day, I think there were bad things around - but maybe the bad things were only in my head, I don't always know.

But the lights and, oh gosh, everything were just so pretty! I went up to the roof of the Library and watched from there almost all night and then I was so tired I just went to sleep in the Greenhouse. It's nice and warm in there, so it was okay.

Everything was very beautiful, wasn't it? It was kind of like the way they celebrate Christmas with the lights hung everywhere as they were.

I thought we already celebrated New Year's though.

[Earth has two New Year's celebrations? That is a little odd! ]

Well, there is a Chinese New Year too. That one has dragon's and fireworks and stuff.

It's very pretty!

I have heard Earth has a lot of countries on one world instead of being entirely unified, I suppose that is what makes the difference.

Uh huh, it does. And everyone has different food and traditions, and best of all, stories! And myths and legends!

[Eagle agrees, with a nod of his head, that all of that does sound fun.]

It is too bad about that fire though. It is a shame the festival was interrupted like that.

Did they ever decide what the cause of that tragedy was?

I don't know. It was kind of scary, though.

I'm just glad nobody seemed to get hurt.

I was up on the roof watching then.

I suppose one of the lanterns could have escaped... That might have caused it. I will have to have a look around the area some time.

But, I am glad to hear no one had been hurt when that happened.

Me too. I don't like seeing people get hurt. It's too scary.

Of course, lots of things are scary, I guess. I'm just not so brave, probably.

I certainly sympathize with that.

[The City always managed to find new 'scary things' to throw at people. Even supposed accidents like this could cause a scare. ]

It is a very good thing that you were only watching from a distance.

I mostly watch things from a distance.

People in Rayearth are named after cars. ^,^]

The ancestors? Well, no. I believe my parents were entirely responsible for it. Our last name is 'Vision', I never really asked why they decided to add 'Eagle' to that.

[She's a little sad about that, but well, that's okay.]

Eagle is considered a very sacred bird, so with the Lakota, if you'd been given the name Eagle Vision it would be considered a very powerful name.

[It still kind of fits. Eagle can be a very powerful person when he sets his mind to something. ]

Is it? Nearly everyone I have run into seems to think it is an unusual kind of name.
But, your people consider it powerful because of a bird?

Because of the kind of bird. Eagle's are sacred.

Uh huh. I got it on my vision quest - when I went to cry for a name.

It started raining right away and it rained and rained for three days and no one came and nobody answered my call and I was so so sad, I thought, I thought that even the ancestors didn't want me.

I cried all the way back to my grandmother's and my dad was waiting and he dragged me away and I just cried till there were no more tears. And then somehow I just knew. They had answered me.

I was Rain.

I see. You have to go on a quest to earn a name?

Your lucky you ended up with one that was well suited to you then.
Rain is a cute name after all.

To get a real name. At least if you're Lakota.

The ancestors always know the right name for someone.

I'm afraid I don't really understand the difference between a name and a real name.

[How could he? This is all very alien to him since he did come from another dimension altogether. ]

Oh gosh.

Well... I guess... You get a name when you're born. But then to get a real name you kind of have to earn it, you know? You have to cry for a vision and then the ancestors will send you something and that's how you find your name. The elders can help you figure out what it means.

And then you discard your original name altogether?

That is very different than my world. We don't chose our names at all. They are just given to use by our parents.
