011 :: Video

[The video feed opens to the network after Bruce has already situated the camera to his satisfaction. His lab is as brightly lit and gleaming as one might expect. What one might not expect is the Christmas display in the center of the camera's optical field.

It's a tree built of various glassware and equipment from his lab, colored water (yes, just water) providing the festive component in the clear glassware.]

We did this when I was an undergrad. Don't ask how long ago that was. As long as you're just using nontoxic colors and water, it's pretty eco friendly.

I guess I wanted to put my own spin on things. I know the City's been treating us to every-other-day 12 Days of Christmas-themed treats, but it's been a while since I was settled enough to do something myself.

So happy holidays. I hope that those of us who want to go home, find our way home soon, and for those of you who are happy here, I hope the curses are more kind than cruel.

There's more than that around here that's going to be weird for you. There's a lot of stuff that happens that looks like magic, and it's going to be all around you.

[He's going to add just a little more hot chocolate to her cup.]

[She sips it a little more slowly this time, enjoying the taste of chocolate again for the first time in months. She looks at Bruce very seriously over the top of her mug.]

Do I need to always be able to tell what's magic and what isn't?

No, I don't think it matters as much as understanding that sometimes people are going to act differently than they usually do, and that it's not your fault, and it's not their fault either.

[Now he's adding a plate with grapes to the counter.]

People around here call them curses, and they usually last for a day, from midnight to midnight.

[AND GRAPES NOW, Bruce you are her favourite person. About three go in her mouth at once which make talking difficult so she will just nod sagely at this information until she's chewed and swallowed.]

Like evil curses? Did people do something wrong here?

No one did anything wrong to belong here. Remember the bit about magic and science? I think that's what's going on here, but no one knows for sure.

[While he talks, he fixes himself a cup of tea]

We get pulled here from different times and places, stay for a while, and then we go home. No one knows how or why, or how long we'll stay, but people say that when you go back, you go back to the time you were taken from, as though no time had passed.

Are my family going to be able to find me?

Your family won't know you're gone. You'll be back like only a blink happened there, and Rosie? You mentioned a Rosie, right? Rosie won't know you were gone, so you don't have to worry.

[She's not really sure she believes him yet, but she can't do much from here. She'll have to explore more in the morning. For now she finishes her soup with a great deal of slurping because Jocelyn isn't here to tell her off for that.]

[He isn't positive he believes it either, but it's a nice story, like Santa or the Tooth Fairy.]

I'm guessing that you haven't heard from anyone from home since you got here? When I got here, there were already people who knew me.

[She wipes her mouth on the back of her sleeve before shaking her head.]

Do most people have someone from their home?

Not everyone, but a lot of people do.

[He offers her a towel and sets a glass of water on the counter.]

Still hungry?

[She finishes the water as well. Water isn't as interesting as the other stuff but she was thirsty.]

No thank you.

[She's still very small for her age, so she doesn't need that much food, and this was the biggest meal she had in months.]

Good.

So, now that you're inside, are you still having problems with the buildings? It's just an apartment, right?

[She gives herself a moment of looking around. The apartment itself is nice, and she makes careful note of all entrances and exits.]

You forget you're so high up.

If you don't get too close to the windows, it's easy to forget.

[Which obviously means she's going to scramble down again and peer out the nearest window.]

What if you need to sneak out without anyone seeing you?

[Bruce puts a finger to his lips and leads her over to a closet door, opening it to show her a bundled rope ladder. Old habits die hard.]

We aren't that high up here, but this is only for emergencies.

[She laughs at that, a slightly evil sounding giggle.]

Good planning.

[Have an eyebrow for the giggle.]

You never know, right?

[Just like the packed "oh shit" backpack by the door is just for emergencies.]

I used to sneak out my bedroom window all the time at home. I'm really good at hiding.

If something happens here that makes you think you need to hide, you should probably do it. The City gets weird sometimes, but if you need someone, you can use your communicator to call me, okay?

I probably would anyway. One time I hid in the house all day and they thought I'd run off. I can be really really quiet.

[Now she is going to investigate the couch because it look highly floppable and wow it is.]

That's some good hiding.

[Rather than pry into why she would want to hide and/or run, he busies himself in the kitchen cleaning up. He wouldn't be surprised if she fell asleep after a good meal and finding somewhere warm.]

[First she's going to count the different kinds of cushions he has and separate them carefully into piles. Then she discovers there's a blanket across the back of the couch and now it is so time to make a sort of couch burrow.]

[In the course of her sorting, he wanders down the hall and returns with another blanket, just casually leaving it on the arm of the couch before going back into the kitchen to clean something that's already clean.]
