First Over || accidental video

[ The video feed opens on a small, wet cardboard box and a handful of thoroughly soaked and utterly useless matches. From the quality of the audio, it's evident the recording is accidental. ]

Where am I? This isn't Ashbury. And-- Oh, great, how am I meant to call Luke now? Wait, what's this? Some sort of portable?

[ A hand comes into view as it picks up the device, revealing a sandy-blond boy in his late teens. His hair and clothes are a few decades out of date, and he seems confused enough by what he's holding to suggest he's not from around here. ]

Oh, it's a camera. Sort of? Where's the film go? [ In trying to figure out where to put the nonexistent film, David accidentally ends the feed. ]

[ FOLLOWING TIME. ]

Sounds neat. Have you made many friends? There's one lady who talked to me on this... thing. [ He wiggles the device. ]

That's a future thing, and that's how I worked out where you were. We shall have to find you some more matches. Anyway, I've made loads of friends. I'll have to introduce you to all of them, even if you've already met Dulcie. One of them is even a version of me from a different universe.

[He's arguably headed for the Welcome Centre, to get David some dry clothing, but he might end up distracted.]

[ He's following along, although really it's just the bottoms of his pant legs that are wet, and he doesn't mind that too horribly much.

He's not sure how he feels about hearing that Luke has so many friends when he's become so used to having Luke all to himself, aside from his own relations. ]

Dulcie seems nice.

[Or food. Or matches. Multi-purpose.]

She's a literal angel.

[And then he stops, suddenly.]

You're under 18, so the City gives you an allowance. Would you like to look at flats?

A flat for just me? [ Because Luke's been here for months, he's bound to already be living somewhere, right? Right? ] Or, for us together?

I was thinking one for both of us together, but we could look for one for just you if you like. [Haha, nope, David. Luke: God of Couch Surfing.]

No, a flat for both of us would be brilliant! Maybe... Could we get a dog too?

I've not seen any of the landlords and ladies have any issue with pets before. We can definitely get a dog. [He opens his arms and spins around in a circle.] There are twelve buildings to live in. Choose a direction.

[ David grins. This is literally everything he could have wanted. He puts one hand over his eyes, points the other straight ahead, and spins in circles until he stops, parting his fingers to peek. ]

That way, I suppose.

That way it is! Come on! [And he's off again.] What sort of flat do you think we ought to look for?

Someplace simple, I should think. We don't need any of that decorative nonsense that Astrid likes. Doilies and such.

Oh, don't blame Astrid, I think they might well grow by themselves. They're a sort of mushroom, surely. Big or small?

Big enough for the both of us and a dog. But not very big. Two bedrooms? [ He asks because most nights Luke stays over he uses David's bed anyways. ]

One bedroom. [He says it decisively, and then, slightly less decisively:] But two beds, I think, I can't go on sleeping at the base of your bed forever. We're getting a dog, after all.

So one bedroom, two beds. A kitchen, and a living room with a sofa. No need for a dining room, I think.

It's much more homely to eat in the kitchen anyway, I think. [They have to take a couple weird turns, but Luke keeps them on course anyway.] The curses Dulcie was mentioning. They're usually rather fun, but they can get a bit serious sometimes. And if they're horrible enough, I won't always be able to come when you call. I'll try to leave you a message on your device or on the Network if I can't. But you know I'd never mean to stay away, right?

[ David puts an arm around Luke's shoulders to reassure him. ]

I know that. It's alright if you can't.

[Grinning, Luke puts his arm around David's, onto his shoulders.] You're always fine, even when I'm worried you're not. [He synchronises his pace, and keeps a companionable arm about David as they walk.]

They're very hands-off, the landlords, because they're magic, I expect. We can just walk along the halls and search out an open flat, and they'll expect the rent from us monthly from then forward.

That sounds easy. No paperwork or anything.

[ David stares up at the buildings they pass. This is definitely a city... very different from Ashbury. ]

It has to work like that, because people are leaving all the time. Sometimes they even forget the first time they were here. [And here they are at the entrance to whatever building they're going to live in.]

You mean, you could leave and come back and not remember all your friends? That sounds very sad.

[ David lets go of Luke to open the door for him. ]

I might. But I'd still remember you, so it would be alright, in the end. [Walking ahead into the lobby, Luke presses the button for the lift.] What floor should we begin our search on?

But what about Dulcie? And Bruce, and Serrure? Wouldn't they be sad if you forgot them?

Um, floor eight, I think. Why not?

Alright. Eight. [The elevator goes ding, and the doors slide open, and Luke holds the door for David.]

I expect they would be, but I'm sure we'd become friends again, soon enough. They'd still be the same people I became friends with in the first place, wouldn't they?

I suppose they would. [ He follows Luke in, and is quiet for the flat ride up. When they get off he pauses. ]
