[Uhura stands against a wall in a dark section of the Underground. She hasn't seen any people yet, and she had quickly discovered that her communicator wasn't working. There was a device at her feet, though, that seemed to do the same thing. It took her a few moments to figure out how to record with it.]
My name is Lieutenant Uhura of the USS Enterprise. If you can hear this message, please respond.
[Of course, there's no guarantee that the people here speak Standard. If this was a Federation device, it would automatically translate her message into every known language. But it's not, so she's just going to have to do that herself. She starts with Swahili.]
Jina langu ni Luteni Uhura ya Enterprise USS. Kama unaweza kusikia ujumbe huu, tafadhali kujibu.
[Switching to Romulan]
Taeth 'nhqh 'hh Lt. Uhura --
[A man comes up behind her. Leering, he grabs her shoulder and whispers something in her ear. When she yanks her shoulder free of him, his expression turns ugly.]
You little--
[He tries to attack, but she easily flips him to the ground, knocking him unconcious. She looks annoyed but unafraid.]
Guess it's Standard.
[ooc: Action for Chekov, audio/video for everyone else!]

action!
Someday, maybe, I would like to meet your family and see a microwave that is in working condition. At home, my relatives who dislike replicators dislike microwaves nearly as much. They still use stoves and ovens. My mother likes to joke with them and ask why, if they insist on being primitive, they don't dispose of the stoves and ovens and cook over fires.
action!
What do they say?
action!
"Lara," they say, "fires are for Chukchi. They appreciate the exercise of hauling wood." And then my mother calls them Cossacks. [His smile falters slightly.] It's not so funny in English, without context.
action!
Humor is hard to translate. Why do you think I joined Starfleet?
action!
[Chekov always needs to convince others that he knows what's going on, especially when those others are his superior officers. Uhura, however, doesn't count, just as Sulu doesn't count.
He slides a menu towards her.]
Please, have what you like. After, I can show you where I live and you can meet Howl and Sophie.
action!
[She takes the menu.]
Anything you'd recommend?
action!
[Uhura gets a smile of the impish what-I-am-about-to-say-is-either-facetious-or-a-gross-exaggeration-of-the-truth variety.]
I respect you too much to allow you to trust my taste in food, sir.
